I'm kind of expecting it to sail over his head and for him to praise me as another 'voice of reason'. You know how irony works round here.

    As in, it don't.

How you keeping, cobber? I see you've been taking issue with old Georgie C having 26 better welters than Hearns. I hadn't realised how badly missing school was affecting the kids.

that is not an argument , boxing is science not folklore , nvm what these imaginary experts or dummies like white bomber say ! Test out jabbing like Sonny liston on some focus pads next time you are in the gym. Load up all your weight on your lead leg and lunge with that jab and have the person holding the pads pull back or dodge that jab , have them throw a rear counter punch too? perhaps you will understand that way ,why you dont want to throw with all that weight on the lead leg !

when joe louis over commited with the jab (same type of issues liston had ) look waht happened,

    (at 1 min 22 seconds , 1 min 48 seconds) ( 2min 34 seconds, 5 min 33 seconds)

Joes opponents were skilled enough to take advantage ,Listons were not . That is the only reason Liston was knocked out every other match! **** your imaginary experts I have these things called eyes and I do this ancient technique called watching the ****ing film of the fighters in question!

LMAO .. what do you build boxing robots and watch them fight ?? Thats a BS statement ..Its not all science ...that leaves no room for creativity or allowing your body to do what works best in order to get the Win ... Do all boxers fight the same ? Do all baseball players swing the bat the same? Cmon dude ... Liston's jab worked, period, and it was one of the best ever ..that is factual .. whether you think he is throwing it scientifically wrong is completely irrelevant ..

The worst thing about this post is that the analysis of the flaw is right (though basic, stop over-explaining) but you still don't realise that Boxers can be much better than others despite doing things 'wrong', since Boxing is really an art, not a pure science, and other contextual factors such as creativity, size, toughness, speed, heart etc also add up, with easy to see, hard to explain / teach things like distance judgement and control of rhythm being the most important. No matter how 'perfectly' some one like Tunney would box in a technical sense against Liston, for example, all Liston has to do is land a flush right hand and the fight would already be close to over, since Liston is both a highly talented, very aggressive fighter and the bigger, stronger man.
There are lots of examples throughout Boxing history of 'crude' fighters, with minor to major flaws, destroying those who are 'better' than them technically, guys who were 'supposed' to win, including in the classic era you idolise so much. Stop being so tunnel visioned and realize that extremely specific technique isn't the end all be all of Boxing. It really isn't. Effectiveness is what matters most.

    Exactly. To quote Wayne Bethea,

"Sonny. You overreach with your jab and are vulnerable to a counter right. Now. Can I have my teeth back, please?'

Was Liston really knocked out every other fight? He had 54 fights, Was he really knocked out 27 times?

    My, my.

Word to the wise, mate. If you're going to take such a strident viewpoint and put yourself on a pedestal higher than not only all the other posters on here but pretty much every expert who ever watched Liston, at least get the basics of your argument right.

Otherwise, even a dumbass like me can pick you apart. Now I know how Liston's opponents - at least the 27 who knocked him out- must have felt like, at having such an easy opportunity to counter.

Reeks of the type of person who gets conspiratorial about the government so they refuse to use marketed soap and make their own as a substitute. Sits in their bedroom with all doors locked, tinfoil hat on head, **** in hand, paranoid as ****. Whispering horror stories about Gene Tunney and his dealings with a bear in the woods. Scribbling notes into the bedside table with an old fork, and it says "boxing has been ruined by modernizaychen no more techneek no more skill just bums"

Does he sit in the corner of a smoky, dim 1920s tavern collecting newspaper clippings? Whilst talking to Bert Sugar and drinking whisky? Damn those old threads were classics.

Liston kept himself safe with constant motion. The man threw more punches a round then Frazier and Marciano. He was a little slow but that’s probably his only flaw. He made up for it with his great jab decent head movement stamina and power in both hands. I question only his heart. Which I’ve been in wars w people about but it’s hard not to question the Ali bouts.
