I could be wrong but I believe he’s fought at welterweight his whole time in the pro ranks but I’ve always thought he looks small at the weight and felt he could make 140 easily enough. do others share my opinion and if so do you think he would be able to become a world champ there?
He certainly does look small for a modern day welterweight alright. He seems very dedicated though so it's not lack of training that s stopping him making 140.
I wouldn’t fancy his chances to win a world title there either. I don’t think he’d beat Taylor, Prograis, Ramirez (although they may all be moving up) or Tank or the guys potentially moving up soon like Lopez.
He just has a lower centre of gravity, the legs off a middle and the upper body of a lightweight. Just a average sized 147
So they (Team Benn) are working towards a Ugas fight... certainly not next but the old "down the line" thing. So what we can assume and take from that is this blueprint of fighting old faded, past it, pension padding fighters with no real or genuine ambition will continue for some time. After all the call outs and mouthing off.. Avanesyan has been completely blanked, it's like he doesn't exist now. Forget any domestic rivals, apparently Benn is above that level now, even though he hasn't touched a British, commonwealth, European or world title.. apparently that doesn't matter, beating a couple of fighters they have stepped in with Porter and a few others makes you fringe world level now. The quicker this gimmick living off his Fathers name gets sparked the better for British boxing, it's just embarrassing.
I don't even see how this is going to develop him. Yea he's improved a lot, in particular his handspeed and accuracy, but as soon as he goes in there with a half decent puncher who can stand and trade with him he's going to run into problems imo. I just don't think he'll have shown improvements on the inside and he'll end up getting put on the deck and probably flattened and it'll like fighting the French lad again. Like we all know there's a reason he's not fighting punchers and being very carefully guided. Get that there trying to give him experience but there also careful to swerve any real threat as well. He's going to look great wailing away on opponents who can't match him for speed or output but I honestly see him getting starched at somepoint sooner than we think. Even Formella managed to briefly stun him, he's just too wild.
