One century ago today: William Harrison "Manassa Mauler" Dempsey vs. Georges "Orchid Man" Carpentier

This was peak dempsey here and technique is at a premium from him , its laughable if you think this technique couldnt do well in modern times , Dempsey would put a lot heavies to sleep!!!!!!!

 

He's fighting a completely unqualified (at heavyweight) pantywaist. He could do a Josh Cobb style impersonation and still win.

Carpienter is more skilled than most of the bums , ali fought ,liston the 90s heavies etc. The technique displayed by Dempsey here is great nvm your issues with the opponent whos skillset you cant properly evaluate .

 

You can't even spell his name correctly when spotted it multiple times in the same thread.

Please list me all the great and relevant victories at heavyweight that Carpentier brought into this fight. Please to deny that Dempsey was informed to carry the Orchid Man so as to give the paying spectators a few rounds of entertainment. This was a essentially a set up, a work. It barely rose above modern pro wrestling.

 

"The Orchid Man" maybe ties with "Cinderala Man" as the second least intimidating boxing nickname.

Now there I would have to disagree.

I will grant you that Carpintier was overrated at the time, but he was eminently qualified for a title shot, and he was the biggest draw of all the potential challengers.

 

He was contrived in to a big draw by the genius of Rickard. Based on merit he had done almost nothing to deserve a chance at the title.

The dude wouldn't even take a seat next to Harry Greb he was so mortified.

 

Why would you think that Rickard had anything to do with him being a huge draw?

Rickard was merely reacting to the market!

Do you think that he would have invested a lot of effort, in promoting French fighter, when he had other options closer to home?

 

I'm sure the match was hyped up to get it to history's first Million Dollar Gate. However, in 1921 Georges Carpentier was definitely a serious Heavyweight Contender for The Lineal Title. He was Heavyweight Champion of Europe and The Lineal Light Heavyweight Champion of the World. I dare say if The Ring had been doing ratings at that time, he would have definitely been ranked in the top 5 Heavyweights of the time, under Dempsey, possibly top 3. Following his 15 round decision loss to Joe Jeannette, he went on a pretty long winning streak leading up to the Dempsey fight, about a dozen wins in a row I believe, often against good Heavyweights. I think a case can be made that he was worthy of a shot at Dempsey's belt. Fight fans obviously thought he was.

spelling his name has no weight on what I typed goofus.You lost your mind if you thought this was a fixed fight .

 

It was a foregone conclusion not an out and out fix.
