Was the middleweight division born in 1970?

IMHO, Bob Fitzsimmons, with Sam Langford not far behind.

Bob Fitzsimmons or Julian Jackson I guess, maybe Langford although he might have been a bit heavier when he became absolutely destructive. Those would be the three though.

Very loose order, could completely rearrange it and I wouldn't object.

Kid McCoy is another very solid puncher, though certainly not on the level of Fitzsimmons.

Though Fitzsimmons was a very exceptional puncher, with a good case for No.1, I think his killer instinct and skills as a finisher where what really set him apart. Not to mention a level of arrogance that was utterly delusional, except it kept being right.

McAvoy, it was his ferocity that he was mostly known for, something like 90 Stoppages of approximately 130 Fights or there about.

It amazes me how much this man gets forgotten, especially when talking about Steele. No Steele without McAvoy... sure didn't I post a report or two about their meeting, that never happened.

But worse, as someone already mentioned, did the Middleweight Division only spawn from the 70s onward.

Loads of great Middles from the 1910s - the 60s, especially in the 30s, 40s and 50s.
