Who would have been the greatest with discipline?

Anyone posting on specific forums such as this one is a 'hardcore' fan in my book, and I really don't have anyone around me to discuss boxing with at all on a non casual level haha. So I would like to hear you guys' thoughts.

For example, it is widely known in the 'hardcore' NBA community that Shaq under achieved, regardless of all of his accolades. If he had Jordan/Kobe level discipline, he would have been the undisputed GOAT.

Who are some great examples in boxing? It usually boils down to ultra naturally talented athletes without discipline, who end up under achieving.

There are actually SO MANY EXAMPLES I could think of, even a guy like Broner.

I think James Toney. Dude probably trained 20% as much as his opponents, if not less... Him just showing up at the Kronk and yelling "who's ready for pain" then proceeding to give everyone work is just stuff of legends. He is the most extreme case of ridiculous amount of talent and lazy I could think of.

 

With his problems with Cocaine I have to say guys like Leonard and Whitaker

 

Bowe, Toney... I'm not saying Tua would be ATG, but he would definitely achieve more than he did has he had an ounce of discipline

 

It's insane what Ruben Olivares achieved given his disdain for training.

 

Yeah Toney definitely fits the bill, at his best beat McCallum at his worst needed a gift decision vs Tiberi. Had he been a gym rat he might have been something truly special, but having said that what he achieved was still damn impressive.

Plenty of other guys could of done more had they been more disciplined. Buster Douglas for sure, Bowe too. While I think we saw the best of Bowe vs Holyfield he could never sustain it. Kirkland Laing definitely could of done more, but being a alcoholic and drug addict ruined any potential he had apart from the Duran win.

Tyrell Biggs was ruined by drug use, he was meant to be the next big thing not Tyson but fame after winning gold in 84 I guess took away any chances he had.

 

Hector Camacho, Zab Judah, Naseem Hamed. Just imagine what Hamed could do if he is actually serious.

 

Mayorga was a chain smoker and i dont think a serious trainer also...

Toney is an ATG. There were times he trained really hard he just was not as good an athlete as a Roy Jones. He is what he is a highly skilled technician with sound fundamentals.

 

I think sky was the limit for bert cooper if he had discipline and stayed clean

Golota had a ton of talent but was mentally warped.
