What are your thoughts of Today's Boxing ?

In my opinion,

1. We have better lighter weights fighter. Like seriously, try and look at their fighters. Loma, Rigo, Inoue, Davis, Haney, Ryan Garcia, etc I just feel like for some reason it's about time the lighter weights should have their golden era and it's time for the HW's to become the boring division.

2. Lack pure power punchers. There's no real power punchers in today's boxing in my opinion, pac-man is good but not the same as Hamed. GGG is kinda good but it still nowhere near the power I feel in Mcclellan, JJ & Hearns. Maybe Wilder & Tank Davis Genuine punchers in today's sport.

3. Better defensive fighters, I think we all can see that.

Better lighter weight fighters? I think there’s some excellent lighter weight guys like Estrada, Inoue, Chocolatito but better than what era? Certainly not the 50s-80s, for example.

 

All in all, a very weak era.

Canelo, Crawford, etc are not all-time greats.

Still some good boxers to watch though.

Do you believe there are too many belts today?

Yeah, the only way you can distinguish yourself if politics won’t allow uniting them all together is to keep winning and prove yourself a complete fighter by beating all styles in the overall top 10 world contenders.

Many can pick up a belt of some kind. But 10 defences of the title proves you are genuine world class. 15 world title wins is another level, and history suggests that 20 world title wins is elite.


Can the fighters of today compete with fighters of yesteryear?

I see fitness, I see nutrition. I see physical strength and jumping jacks. I don’t see the technical ability that I saw Roberto Duran, Mike Tyson, Mike McCallum and James Toney possess.

I don’t see the ring generalship of Roy Jones Jr from these Crawfords or Spences.

I wasn’t doing push ups or weightlifting or sprint the 100 metres, I was concerned with a good few hours straight each day of drilling boxing techniques when I was coming up. Trying to get the pivots right, the balance, the side stepping, the weaving, the combination punching, the angles, the footwork....

I would spar at 100% contact. Not tap spar. These were genuine fights. That’s why I could catch a jab without thinking about it, slip a punch without prior thought and actually counter-punch without prior movement and without blocking.

That’s why I could absorb a punch without telegraphing pain.

I don’t think fighters today are doing this.

 

There is almost no strong divisions today. Partly because of the proliferation of them, but partly due to the lack of talent that previous eras have had (which has come from the total domination at the hands of Wlad, who ever watched a Wlad fight and thought "I wanna be like him!"), and that they never ****ing fight. Crawford and Spence have been co champions for about four years now and we're no close to getting it made now than we were in 2017.

Everything is hyped and geared up to be something which makes people money, not to entertain the fans. Which is understandable given how much the fighter's put into it, but frustrating to watch. And at the end of the day, it's not a business, it's a sport. Entertainment should be the main priority, since that's both what the sport's for, and where money ultimately comes from.

 

Is it a sport, really? Amateur boxing is a sport. Pro prize fighting is just that

I disagree about Canelo. Crawford you may be right but his career isn’t over quite yet

 

Hell of a lot better than it was a century ago despite what the romanticists might say.

 

Lots of good points. There’s too many fighters that have mastered the art of giving us “reasons” they shouldn’t fight. It’s the marinating era. The 5-6 belts per division promotes ducking, and trinket grabbing, then you’ve got a dumber fan base following boxing than ever and the fighters pander to them. They know what to say to make it look like they are being ducked while doing a whole bunch of quacking themselves.

 

Best athletes ever in the sport. Better prepared. Better trained. Broader net of recruitment. We are in the Golden Age. Only to be surpassed by tomorrow.

At one point the smaller weights had, pac, Morales, Castillo, Corrales, Barrera, Marquez, Casamayor, Mayweather. Nobody in the smaller weights that you mentioned beats the guys on my list.
