Joseph Obey Joyce vs. Armand Carlos Netsing Takam & Chris Jenkins vs. Ekow Essuman RBR.

I guess we take very different things out of his performance....I see opportunities future opponent's will (I believe) capitalize on and you see great promise in him. Suppose its that old half-empty vs half-full thing...

 

If its his defense you think will be capitalised on, its possible but Joyce wont be as open if he is wary of the oppositions power

He clearly took Takams and wasn't too bothered so didnt feel a need to adjust

 

Disagree the referee's job in part is to ensure someone doesn't get hurt and protect a fighter against his own bravery. If it's only the corners concern then the ref shouldn't have the capacity in the rules to stop it, yet he does, because that's his job. Even if it wasn't his job he's a human being he saw a man taking shot after shot and so stepped in, would you just walk past a guy getting his arse kicked? Of course not, human empathy means you step in and try to save the person from getting hurt.

As for getting your arse kicked yes it's boxing but only to a certain point. Sure he wasn't dropped but neither was Argentinian boxer Hugo Alfredo Santillan when he went 10 rds with Eduardo Javier Abrue and he still died after the fight. Fact is Takam was hurt twice and getting hit over and over again and wasn't defending himself and Takam has never been a fighter to turn things around, he starts well then gets broken down.

 

I'm going to wait until I've seen the full fight with full rounds, he might not have been as bad or dumb as he looked on the HL's.

 

That's what surprised me about this performance. After rd 2 I thought we'd see Joyce make adjustments like he did after Jennings hurt him to the body in their fight. I thought he'd be less reckless, stick behind the jab and show more movement but he clearly had no respect for Takam's power at all and just kept plowing forward.

 

I thought he would adjust when seeing how Takam started going to the body

He even shrugged those blows off

 

I understand a referee's role well....and it may have been a good stoppage, but its pretty rare for a stoppage to be good if the fighter hasn't been dropped or a KD called for being held up by the ropes. I'll wait and see how many punches Takam took in that round, but it didn't look excessive to me. Fighters take hundreds of shots a fight....and while I accept Takam could have given the ref an opportunity, this type of referee-ing isn't good for the sport.

A referee shouldn't be figuring that Takam hasn't won a round, or is behind on the scorecards when he makes his assessment...that's not part of his calculation. Its solely, is the fighter hurt too hurt to safely continue? The ref only has one job because of how important and crucial it is to get right. From my view (admittedly inferior to the ref's) it looked to me like he could continue. If wrong, he get stopped = KO. At the least give Takam an 8 count.

Unfortunately, the safety first approach to reffing has seen some of them go overboard, and include eg. the offensive capabilities of a fighter into the calculation...eg. he's a little bit hurt, but X is a huge puncher and the KO might be scary so I'll jump in now. See how an irrelevant factor was inserted in? How many Tyson fights were waved off after one KD because the referee was scared?

All in all, its probably too early to say re. this stoppage...especially given that I haven't seen a full round of the fight yet...but I didn't like the look of that referee.

Re. Hugo Alfredo Santillan ....yeah, I get that, but remember that Hvy KO's look scary but aren't the one's that kill. That's almost always in the lighter weights / below 160lb's.

 

Agree. Joyce is big and tough but glacially slow and with few attributes that make me sit up and perk my ears up. Imagine the Holyfield-Lewis generation in there with him. Que Massacre!

 

Personally I think it's quite ironic that the very same ref in the Ritson v Ponce fight even went as far as to throw the towel back out of the ring when Ritson was being pummelled from pillar to post. I guess it's different when it's the home fighter on top?

 

I'll let you know when I've watched the full fight with full rounds while sober tomorrow....and thanks for the other fight to compare his refereeing with...I'll check that out also. (Teir 4 Lockdown atm!)

I'l posit this though - do you think Steve Smoger would have stopped the fight at that point? The stoppage discretion is wide and he's probably appropriately within it, but I don't think it could be argued that he could have stopped it any sooner, could he? That suggests he's on the excessive 'safety end' of the stoppage spectrum, if you catch my drift.

 

I just watched it again, being sober this time.
It was a good stoppage, Takam didnt throw a punch for a good 20 seconds and got hit with 40-50 at least in that time.

Is this actually worth watching? Bearing in mind that even had I not been busy yesterday watching a pair of lumbering slow super heavies (even live with no predestination of the result) isn't really my cup of tea?

Sitting through five rounds and change is a lot of this kind of thing, for me...unless it was a HWFOTY contender (which it doesn't sound like).

 

i wouldnt change any plans to watch it, but if you got time to kill. its entertaining, in its own way.

The away fighter Takam was up on all three judges scorecards. Not surprising given how flush Joyce was being caught yet some had him winning all her rounds haha no bias on here at all.

BT sport commentary was awful, they hated when Josh Taylor stepped in and kept it real about how awful Joyce was.
