That genuinely made me get a tad emotional honestly. So sad that a mans career ended like that.

so to anyone complaining about early stoppages etc you’re basically saying you’d prefer to see epic fights which could then ultimate with these guys ending up like this man :(

Tbh, he ended up like that not because ref didnt stop the fight, but because this ******* let the opponent punch Colon like 15 times behind the head

I just don't get why he wasn't given a standing count. Takam didn't help himself though by not punching back. I guess it's the refs job to protect the fighters, so understand why it happened, but in my opinion, it was premature.

These Brit refs would be no use in a Rocky movie. Film wouldn't last 30 mins.

i dont think it should have been stopped. his work had been better up to that point and he was responding, he was weaving trying to time a counter in between the swings. when youre in that position youre not counting punches to make sure the ref dont see too many, your mind is focused completely on seeing that opening and dodging those shots. he was completely lucid as the ref was waving. some of the greatest victories in the sport have come after coming back from much worse shape.
nobody condones or wants to see fighters die or live incapacitated the rest of their lives, but its gonna happen, not every link is as strong in this chain. but we dont have a problem watching joe take shots to the head, fight after fight, that have left other men handicapped. why? cause he aint slurring his words yet? boxers get hit, boxers get hurt, thats the sport. just like climbing freestyle means 1 mistake, you die. we love and admire these men cause they truck on anyway.

The stoppage was fine. Takam was taking some serious heavy head shots and not firing back at all. We've seen several boxers go into comas when this happens. Takam is tough but was clearly past the point of having a chance of winning under Joyce's relentless barage of punchers. And Joyce has probably the best gas tank at HW. He would not let up.

Steve Gray is not always my cup of tea but in this case good decision.

And for those who say/imply they enjoy the chance someone might get seriously hurt in boxing - I feel sorry for you.

I didnt love the stoppage but Takams head shot back a good amount on that last right hand and that is usually a sign to the ref that a guy is in danger and he had taken so many shots leading up to it. do i think he was knocked out, no i dont but was he basically done in the fight, yeah.

boxing is dangerous and i hate really early stoppages but it is a sport at the end of the day and not gladiators to the death. i understand fighters want to be able to fight on but that is what refs and corners are for.

So do you guys think the Wilder Fury first fight should have been stopped in the 12th too?

After taking such a heavy blow and being out of it?

Or should a fighter be allowed the opportunity to try turn the tables? Takam wasn't going down yet.

It's safety of fighters when it suits, give them the opportunity when it suits.

When it's a long one sided beating and there is less rounds remaining than the loser is down points, I am in favor of stoppages before the fighter is hurt. Save a lot of fighters from taking hundreds of shots late in fights throughout their career.

this i agree with. if the better man has been established, and the guy is reduced to a miracle shot to win, then theres no sense in letting him continue hurt. but that wasnt the case here. he was landing to the head practically at will, and had put in a considerable amount of body work as well, that would no doubt start to take its toll. if he doesnt respond offensively or defensively, and he really is just a sitting duck, then step in. but he was still trying to move defensively, he knew where he was at.

Haven't seen it but all accounts say it was the opposite of my criteria.

False equivalency in your comparison because in the case of both fights the referee gave the fighter a chance to turn it around.

Fury went down the ref counted and gave him the opportunity to get up and fight back which he did immediately hurting Wilder.

Takam was rocked, did the stanky leg and just like with Fury the ref gave him the opportunity to continue, allowed him to take numerous shots while punching back, only to take further big shots which resulted in Takam not punching back and even then the ref gave him some leeway, allowed him to take even more punches and only stepped in when he was clearly hurt again.

far from a one sided beat down, he was beating the crap out of joe. if he wasnt, the theme wouldnt be what a monster jaw joe is totin.
