I rewatched this fight at the reccomendation of the ever estimable @JohnThomas1 because I'd mentioned I felt Holmes was ahead after seven rounds and...well, I still feel that way my friend. Holmes made a bad mistake not getting on that cut like a fly on...uh, flypaper.

    1 Holy 10-9
    2 Holmes 10-9
3 Holy 10-9 (Holy scored two great rights but Holmes looked fine and certainly rallied at the end. I wouldn't be shocked if someone scored this even)
    4 Holmes 10-9
5 10-10 (Holyfield was overall busier but I don't see either fighter gettting the better. I guess it could be scored for Evander for aggressiveness....?)
6 Holmes 10-9 (Holmes landed two of the most effective shots of the fight here, Holy got some good shots in, but none as effective...no)
7 Holmes 10-9 (Evander was really competitive here, but Holmes opened and closed the round with more effective, heavier shots. Holy was having trouble landing flush)
8 Holy 10-9 (Holmes mystifyingly doesn't press the issue on the cut...baffling)
9 Holy 10-9 (Completely bewildered by Holmes' lack of pressing the advantage. Must be fatigue.)
10 Holy 10-9 (Holy is by far the busier, more effective fighter.)
11 Holmes 10-9 (Holmes landed by far the more effective shots, I'd be surprised if anyone scored this for Holy)
12 Holy 10-9 (but this was a close round, no doubt. Holy was getting very belabored at this point).

    116-114 Holyfield

I left this fight feeling, as the announcers mentioned, kind of full of questions about Holy at this point. Granted, this wasn't his prime (that came with the first Bowe fight), but he had a really hard time landing flush and effectively through most of this fight.

In a way this really was a Holmes victory, as he proved he could hang with the best of the day and came off looking ridiculously good given his age (and wipe-out by Tyson several years earlier).

Nice post! I do not consider myself skilled at scoring fights, curious at what others see.
How did you score Holyfield vs. Foreman?
Do you think Holyfield was appreciably better or more prime in either fight?

Also, do you agree that while Evander did at least slightly better vs. Foreman, George was likely more impressive considering that a slugger like him is at a style disadvantage-just like Foreman would take out a swarmer like Frazier while Holmes at least would have a much harder time of it?

I felt like that. I wanted Holy to step up and prove himself a true great here. It going the distance only proves that Holmes had a great chin, and the experience to survive but maybe not win all the big fights anymore.

I absolutely agree. It was way too competitive.

When you bring that up in hindsight of the BF24 Mummy Fetish (good ol George), who looked extremely solid by blocking punches with his face, the croud suddenly switches to "both did very well!" :crazylick:

I left this fight thinking about how good Spinks win over Holmes that took place 7 years earlier looked. I had Holy winning by a couple of rounds but Holmes certainly had something left in the gas tank. This fight, the Mercer fight and the McCall fight showed how dangerous Holmes was even at an advanced age.

I used to play poker with a guy who insisted for years, but it began after the Holyfield-Holmes fight, that he could beat Holyfield.

People forget how truly awful Holyfield's first heavyweight title reign was viewed.

The difficult defense against the 42-year-old Foreman was roundly criticized. Getting floored by late late sub Cooper - who stepped in for late sub Damiani - sent off alarm bells. And the Holmes fight, where Holyfield could've easily lost on cuts, really had fans down on the Real Deal.

    Then he lost to Bowe.

Those wins aged better than they looked at the time. If Evander never returned to the ring after the first Bowe or Moorer loss, I don't know how he'd be viewed today. He announced his retirement after both.

    Probably not highly.

It really took him a long time to win people over.

Fyi, this version losses audio somewhere around the 8th round, in case that bothers you.

    Evander Holyfield vs Larry Holmes

    World Heavyweight Championship

    1992

    EH : LH

1: 10 - 9 Clear Holy round on aggression. Holy parry on point.
2: 9 - 10 Good round. Holmes more effective with his in fighting
3: 10 - 9 Holmes jab mostly parried. Beautiful right from Holy.
4: 10 - 10 Nothing of note 'till the last minute. Lovely infighting.
5: 10 - 9 Closer. Holmes just not active enough.
6: 10 - 9 Holyfield working and landing. Holmes both slothful and ineffective.

7: 10 - 9 Closer. Holmes still just a little too inactive and isn't effective enough to negate that.
8: 10 - 9 Holmes just wasting too many opportunities
9: 9 - 10 Holyfield losing effectiveness. Holmes picking his spots well.
10: 9 - 10 Momentum shift - Larry now the centre ring general and Holyfield missing, lowering activity
11: 9 - 10 Close. Holmes effective but Holyfield worked the entire round being only a little less so.
12: 10 - 9 Holmes again wasting a good round by being lazy for it's majority

    TOTAL: 116 - 113 HOLYFIELD

    Notes:
    • I didn't find this very hard to score and honestly don't see the controversy about it. Holyfield was definitely the better man until the cut affected his work and range, and he still took rounds even then.
    • Holmes tries to steal it near the end of most rounds.
    • Holmes wasting too many opportunities for the majority of the fight, and his jab was not effective enough to negate his laziness, as Holy constantly parried and blocked and rolled it.
    • Holmes coming on strong. If he was more active it is possible he could have got a draw or even won.

Holmes had long since retired when Don King proposed him to fight Tyson. He accepted only for money. With more training he would have gone to decision even with Mike imo. Great fighter.

I'll be happy to watch and score the Holy/Foreman fight if you folks like, sure! I thought that was actually a very good fight, Holy almost got knocked out at least twice.

    GREAT idea!
