As someone who was recently bemoaning the 'pussification' of footbal in the recent Euros - red cards for perfectly good ball-winning tackles, and just a general removal of the physical nature of the game I knew when I was young, I totally get the view of the OP and other's in the thread that don't want to see "quick" stoppages.

On the other hand, each case needs to be taken on it's own merits / circumstances. At first I thought it was a fairly 'soft' stoppage, but on each successive replay I saw, I could see why Steve Gray stepped in.

Additionally, Steve Gray recently came under a huge amount of fire for rejecting a towel being throw in in an other fight. It's possible in this one that he maybe stepped in a bit earlier than he would have ordinarily if he hadn't been under scrutiny for that previous controversy.

It maybe would have been a better win for Joyce if he had laid Takam out after another 30 secs or so, but then Gray would have been lambasted for letting it go on too long.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't!

If Uysk landed the same series of blows on Joshua, and Joshua wobbled like that but didn't go down, and the fight was stopped ... this board would EXPLODE.

    And rightfully so.

Takam immediately responded when the ref jumped in. He was weathering the storm. That used to be allowed. Let Joyce finish his work, put him down and allow Takam the opportunity to get up.

That was a bad stoppage. This isn't the Olympics. It's professional boxing.

This is right on the money. This fight was clearly prematurely stopped. Fighter need to be accorded the opportunity to weather the storm and come back.

These squeamish refs are ROBBING them of the opportunity to do so, and they are ROBBING we the fans of the opportunity to see exciting back-and-forth fights. THESE are the real robberies, not the close debatable decisions fans are always complaining about!!!

    Correct.

These quick stoppages in a way remind me of the goofy rule they imposed at one Olympics (when they were counting punches) that if one boxer went ahead by 15 points (or 15 clean scoring punches) ... the fight was stopped and it was ruled a referee stops contest (or TKO).

They'd be in a middle of a round. A guy would land a jab. Go up 15 points. And the ref would wave it off. It counted as a stoppage win. It was nonsensical.

So are stoppages like this. At no point was Takam out. He was taking punches. But you are allowed to take punches. He got wobbled with the last one, but you are allowed to wobble. You can even get knocked down. You can even get knocked down several times.

Fighters shouldn't receive credit for stopping guys they didn't stop.

And a guy shouldn't have a stoppage loss because the ref got nervous. If this ref was badmouthed for letting one fight go on too long, and now he's stopping fights too soon, then get a new ref. Because this guy has lost the ability to objectively referee a fight.

Takam didn't go anywhere. I have been a fan of Joe Joyce since the Olympics. But that was a bad stoppage.

I havent seen the Takam fight so I cannot comment but one of the ref's jobs is to protect the fighters health. Dont you think that clown that reffed Benn/McClellen & let McClellen have his life ruined, it badly affected Nigel Benn's career too, should have ever been allowed near a boxing ring again.
Takam can fight again tragically Gerald McClellan could not

Watch the fight before comparing it Benn-McClellan, for God's sake.

The referee's job is to make sure the boxers follow the rules. Getting punched in the head for a living is unhealthy.

By the rules of boxing, nothing took place that warranted that fight being stopped. That's why people are complaining.

I wanted Joyce to win. But that was a bad stoppage. Takam was totally in the fight.

If Takam had come out fast that round, and the ref had stopped the fight with Joyce taking those punches, and Joyce had gotten his first loss, I'd have been livid.

That was just bad refereeing by an official who has been criticized for his choices before. The problem seems to be with him. So don't use him.

what do you mean you havent seen the fight? youve been betting anyone who thinks it should have continued, has never been in a ring before. how are you coming to this conclusion without ever even seeing the fight?

TBH I don't think it'd explode in the way (I think) you're implying here.

It'd explode with people calling Joshua an unskilled hypejob who goes all deer-in-the-headlights when someone dares hit him...
Very few would deny Usyk his win if he'd landed 30+ unanswered shots and Joshua wasn't even defending himself (although as we saw in Ruiz I, Joshua is aware enough when he's out of it to take a knee and wait for the rematch anyway).

Bashing Joshua is very popular around here.

(And I say that as someone who would be more than happy to see him take a good beating or three).

LOL. Now I almost wish it would happen.

Let me go on record as saying "IF" Joshua and Usyk fight five competitive rounds ... and Usyk starts fast in round six, lands a bunch of head punches ... Joshua wobbles ... and the fight is immediately stopped ... and Joshua immediately grabs the ref and starts screaming at him ...

Not only will Eddie Hearn rush into the ring threatening to sue the referee and everyone else ...

The British Government will investigate charges of fight fixing ... like the Feds in the U.S. did when Foreman lost the decision to Briggs.

Hell, Razor Ruddock was wobbled worse than that against Mike Tyson in their first fight, the fight was stopped, and a riot erupted in the ring and it was considered such a HORRIBLE call ... and to avoid lawsuits against the Nevada Commission and everyone else ... a rematch was ordered (for a non-title fight) three months later.

Boxing doesn't have a rule where if you get hit with so many unanswered punches, the fight is stopped. You can go a whole round and not throw any punches in a pro ring. It's not smart, unless you are Willie Pep, but you can.

Fights shouldn't be stopped the first time a guy wobbles. These are professional fighters.

    * You are allowed to get rattled so hard by shots that you get knocked to the floor up to three times IN EACH ROUND, and sometimes many more times than that.
    * You are given 10 seconds to get up EACH TIME you go down.
    * You are sometimes given even more time than that after you go down and get up for the ref to look at you and for a doctor to come in and check you out.

One WOBBLE should never cause the end of a professional fight. Particularly a competitive professional fight. It's a fight, after all.

This was the case of a bad official who no longer has the judgement to make these calls, because he got criticized for stopping one fight too late so now he's stopping fights too early. He should be removed from any future assignments.

These weren't two inexperienced fighters and one was in way over his head. This was a good fight and neither guy was out. There was ZERO reason to stop that fight.

The referee failed at his job.

    Disagree.

I see where you're coming from, I just don't quite agree.

It's not the referees job to prolong the fight long enough for a KO - if it happens that's great, but equally if one fighter is just taking a beating it's time to call it, and that's how it was here.

Hit and don't get hit... If you're throwing nothing, blocking very little and getting hit at will, you're outmatched and it's time to pull you out of there.

Referees do have responsibility for a fighters wellbeing and allowing them to sustain a one-sided beating because they're outmatched and/or completely drained is to abdicating that responsibility.

I can agree to disagree on this one, but I didn't think this was a bad stoppage, certainly not a travesty.

Complete and utter bollocks! The argument of a keyboard warrior who has no doubt never set foot in a ring and, before you reply in haste, yes, I have done a bit of boxing, along with Karate, Tetsudo, kick boxing and a stint on the doors.

I don't care for being punched in the head once, let alone dozens if not hundreds of times during the course of a fight. Often, these fighters need protecting from themselves and are far to brave for their own good. Just watch the Eubank Jnr. V Nick Blackwell fight and you will see why a compassionate referee is required...... and that fight was a great example of a referee failing to intervene 3-4 rounds earlier.
