I don't know why boxing fans have so readily accepted clinching as part of boxing. It's not. It's tolerated by refs because they can't distinguish between an accidental one and a deliberate clinch. It's also open for abuse. Khan gets deducted a point against Peterson for it, whilst Ruiz and Horn made a career out of it. It makes fights extremely boring. It allows fighters several levels below others to get by and even "win" by hugging their way through it. Refer to Ruiz and Tyson's taller opponents. IMO, rules are rules. Enforce them all equally. A clinch to me is equivalent to a low-blow or a rabbit punch. It's illegal. Go wrestle elsewhere. When I boxed Ams, I'd be embarrassed and would get told off by the ref after initiating a clinch twice in a round. Fighters these days get away with bloody murder. The Marquess of Queensberry rules are as follows: To be a fair stand-up boxing match in a 24-foot ring, or as near that size as practicable. No wrestling or hugging (clinching) allowed. The rounds to be of three minutes duration and one minute’s time between rounds. If either man falls through weakness or otherwise, he must get up unassisted, 10 seconds to be allowed him to do so, the other man meanwhile to return to his corner, and when the fallen man is on his legs the round is to be resumed and continued until the three minutes have expired. If one man fails to come to the scratch in the 10 seconds allowed, it shall be in the power of the referee to give his award in favor of the other man. A man hanging on the ropes in a helpless state, with his toes off the ground, shall be considered down. No seconds or any other person to be allowed in the ring during the rounds. Should the contest be stopped by any unavoidable interference, the referee to name the time and place as soon as possible for finishing the contest; so that the match must be won and lost, unless the backers of both men agree to draw the stakes. The gloves to be fair-sized boxing gloves of the best quality and new. Should a glove burst, or come off, it must be replaced to the referee’s satisfaction. A man on one knee is considered down and if struck is entitled to the stakes. That no shoes or boots with spikes or sprigs be allowed. The contest in all other respects to be governed by revised.
A good ref will shout instruction to punch your way out and allow non clincher to land a few. Then break it. Start warning clincher when its obvious to see hes just holding to hold. If hes hurt bad and clinching to survive it ok.
Look at bhop vs joppy And bhop vs de la hoya. Ref breaks de la hoya immediately everytime he ties up. They tried to help oscar rather then allow bhop to hit in clich. If bhop threw on punch they started warning him. Bs
Well it depends upon the fighters, clinching and inside work might make one fight seem more interesting but may cause an absolute stinker of a turd for others.
Watch Fury's clinching game, very very closely and you'll see and enjoy the artform In its pure form, a straight up clinch followed by a referee break is one of the worst things in boxing. Devon Alexander, Floyd, Ali, Wlad My god. Wlad's clinching & pushing of Pulev & Povetkin was disgusting. Watching two big men in AJ & Fury manhandle Wlad in the clinch and work him over was glorious.
Sometimes it's laughably OTT and some refs do allow it to spoil the flow of the fight - in that sense it can matter, sometimes. Equally, the reason very few people care about rule #1 is because smaller rings don't spoil the spectacle - if anything, they make running harder which improves it. In a sense, unless clinching is spoiling a particular contest, we ought to be okay with it if we're being consistent... But we're human, and that means we often fixate on one rule whilst completely ignoring another. Professional boxing is more about the spectacle and business side of things than ensuring even contests. Most of the time it's not too big a deal to me - the times it gets OTT the referees normally deal with it about as well as they're realistically able to.
This equivalent to saying “watch Judah’s low blow game, it’s an art form”. “Watch mcgregor’s hammer fists on Floyd, it’s an art form”. “Watch floyds bending below the waist, it’s an art form”. “Watch this guys sucker punches, it’s an art form”. who gives a fk if it’s an art form. It’s illegal, it’s against the rules. All rules should be enforced equally. You don’t get to low blow someone because you’re about to get ktfo and that’s how you survive. You don’t hug someone cos you’re about to get ktfo to survive either, it’s against the rules. Put it this way, a hugger wouldn’t get away with 1/4th of their hugs in their opponents territory, if their opponent is not hugger. The arbitrariness of which this rule is enforced shows that it’s one of the loopholes open to abuse, much like corrupt hometown judging.
Wlad vs Povetkin is easily the worst overuse of clinching live. Wlad should have been disqualified to be honest. One day I watched Ali vs Frazier II and Ali took the cake as the worst. He clinched Joe Frazier 100+ times in the least entertaining fight of their trilogy.
I think boxing needs a revamp.... i see fans crying about all sorts of **** from the 10 count to "back of the head" lol doesn't seem like most people even know the rules. They need to be made clear and applied the same every time.
BS Clinching is nothing like a low blow or a head butt, those are offensive fouls clinching is a defensive foul
So if u low blow defensively to stop yourself from getting KO’d and keep your opponent off you, it’s the same? logic. Not even once.
Only thing I want to correct is that Khan got a point deducted for pushing Peterson. He was warned numerous times. Also, the way Khan just pushed Peterson was absolutely ridiculous.
