Judges somehow not unanimous for the American in the first round, with three of five going his way. Commentator agrees with that, as though he felt it could go either way. Idk, seemed a pretty clear round for Davis to me. Ring general, landing a higher percentage...

 

Oumiha rocked and 'saved'. KO2!!

Maybe not the greatest stoppage but honestly not the worst. That was quite the stanky leg dance the Moroccan-Frenchman did after getting tagged with that overhand right he didn't see coming.

 

Second time Keyshawn Davis has broken Sofiane Oumiha's heart. They've met once before, and "The Businessman" denied the man from Toulouse a medal by eliminating him in the quarterfinals of the AIBA world championships in Ekaterinburg in 2019 ...and now yeets the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the Round of 16!!

 

Gabil Abil Ogli Mamedov (ROC) vs. Richarno Louis Colin (MRI), 63kg

 

This cat from République de Maurice - who aren't really known for their boxing prominence - can go. More than holding his own with a younger and more seasoned product of the formidable Russian system (that in spite of some of their recent successes being clouded by a doping scandal, which is why he and other Russian athletes this year aren't competing under their flag, officially)

 

Judges were split 4-1 in Mamedov's favor in the first (perhaps generously) - but they're unanimous in giving him the second, a much improved frame in which he did clearly put in the best work. Stepping around slipping and countering with body combos, very fluid.

 

At this point the Mauritian needs a KO but he isn't really going for it, sort of bottling it and letting this slip away here. Guess there wasn't all that much of a burning desire to become his country's second ever medalist (the first was, incidentally, a boxer as well, taking bronze at bantam in '08 at the games in Beijing)

 

30-27 x4 and 29-28, UD for Mamedov.

 

Not a foregone conclusion, but I do favor him, yeah.
