Held bit not Hold. He's no longer a LHW Champ. When Mayweather fought Canelo, both were current 154-lb Champs and Canelo was a big 154-lber. This is completely different as Canelo is not a 175-lb Champ and Bivol is a small 175-lber who says he could make 168.
Point is, he went to 175 and won a belt. Bivol is currently a LwHW title holder. If Canelo had no interest in defending his 175 title, you could say it was simply a title shot cherry pick w/ a shot Kov. Yes? Oscar said he could fight at WW again vs. Pac. How'd that turn out? Chad Dawson said he could make 168 for Ward....how'd that turn out?
You don't drag a SMW up a full weight class either. Why would it matter to Bivol whether it's at 175 or 172? Bivol has said he can make 168 no problem. If he can make 168 no problem then surely he could make 172 easily. 168 might be a strain on a short camp, but 172 should be no problem for a small LHW. But I don't want to see a catchweight any more than you do, that's why I'd rather see him defend his 168-lb titles than move up to LHW again. Well lets not forget, Bivol was the plan B. He was trying to make the fight with Plant. Now since that fell through he has to scramble to get an opponent. I don't know about you, but I don't think Canelo needs to be chasing Light Heavyweights or moving up in weight. Canelo has titles at 168-lb, he should be defending those. His team should reach out to Carlos Gongora and make an offer. That's a unification at SMW. Gongora is undefeated and is IBO SMW Champ. I know the IBO isn't as big as the other world titles, but it's still a World Championship and with the Plant fight falling through, that's the best opponent available and it's a chance for Canelo to pick up another world title at 168-lbs.
I don't think it was a matter of interested, he couldn't defend his 175-lb title without dropping one of his 168-lb titles. When you're a title holder in two weight classes, you have to choose which title to drop. This is another reason why it makes no sense to fight Bivol for his title at 175-lb. Even if he wins it, he'll just have to drop it after he won it so he can keep his 168-lb titles. This was covered in the other topic. Those decisions didn't turn out well, but the difference is those guys were much bigger and it was much harder for them to drop to the weight class below than it would be for Bivol who's repeatedly said he's a small LHW and can make 168.
So, against young fighter catchweight makes sense, but against old, drunk, beaten Kovalev not? ahahahhaha How the **** Bivol is trying to drag Canelo up in weight? You absolutely lost touch with reality. Its diva Canelo who uses his "A-side" **** to ruin good competitive fights.
When this fight was announced, this was literally the worst case scenario outcome. A catch weight fight with a short camp. Canelo has gone to 175 before now and fought a title holder so you have to assume the only reason he won't do now is because he isn't as confident of securing victory. This is a really bad look. It puts Bivol in a win-win and by default puts Canelo in a lose-lose.
I think Canelo mainly hurts himself with a catch weight. Probably won't do much difference, but it will always put a stain on it even if he wins. A serious disappointment if there is one.
Giving that Canelo already fought at 175, and now out of sudden he is forcing WBA champion Bivol to fight at cw on short notice, shows how much of an scared lil dickhead Canelo is.
Kovalev was a big LHW who was much older than Bivol is now. Bivol is a small LHW who can make 168. This shouldn't be too hard for you to understand. He gave an interview last week that he said he can make 168 no problem. But now we're hearing about a catchweight. You do the math. Isn't it clear what happened? Canelo offered him a fight at 168, which Bivol said last week he could do. Bivol then got cold feet about that and now will only fight him at a catchweight above 168-lbs.
In fairness they're scrambling for an opponent after the Plant fight fell through. It's not like they wanted to be forced to make this fight happen now. Canelo is a 168-lb Unified Champ trying to schedule the best opponent can find. He has a guy in Bivol saying that he'll come down to 168 to fight him, then he calls him on it and Bivol backs away from fighting him at 168 now, presumably saying that he needs a longer camp which is understandable. And now Bivol is wanting him to come up a weight class to fight him. Canelo should be fighting at 168. Why should he move up a full weight class to fight Bivol when Bivol has said he can come down to 168? If you want to make the argument that catchweight fights are a stain on Canelo's legacy, then why haven't other fighters been treated similarly when they had catchweights? Mayweather, Pac, Cotto, etc? Sometimes catchweights are the only way to make fights happen when there's a weight gap between fighters and there's only a limited amount of time in camp. Personally I'd rather Canelo stay at 168-lb but he's trying to fight the biggest name he can for September. If a catchweight is the only way to make this fight happen now, then maybe it's better than nothing but I share your dislike of catchweights especially for title fights. At the same time, it is very difficult for Canelo to find people to fight him.
