This content is protected 1. Basilio began by targeting Davey's head right out of the gate. Basilio's stance in round 1 was to hold his right close to his chin and hold his left way out to stop Davey's pathetic jabs. Basilio stunned Davey twice in a row with left-right hook combos. Basilio. 2-7. Davey took control of the fight from Basilio in round 2, pretty easily, and out-boxed and outclassed Basilio, who looked totally frustrated throughout, although he made rounds 4 and 7 competitive. 8-10. A left eye cut began to plague Davey in the 8th, and Davey began to clinch a lot more, starting in that round. His reduced vision made it more difficult for him to fend off Basilio, who won the majority of the exchanges of the 9th. Basilio even hurt Davey in the 9th; Davey nearly toppling to the floor. Davey was back to his bouncy, pathetic self in the 10th, but got hit by a lot more of Basilio's punches than he had previously allowed himself to; again, due to his reduced vision. Still, Basilio failed to capitalize enough on Davey's recent handicap. Score: 1. Basilio. 2. Davey. 3. Davey. 4. Even. 5. Davey. 6. Davey. 7. Davey. 8. Basilio. 9. Basilio. 10. Basilio. 5-4-1 for Davey. Verdict: A pretty disappointing fight. Since this was a Basilio fight, I figured that it would be tremendously exciting, but was only assuming. I should have kept in mind how green he would have been at this point, combined with the reality of Davey's horrible "sparring" style. Overall, a less than mediocre fight. I would be interested to see the draw though.
Hi William, so this is an interesting one. I watched this fight not that long ago and spent the whole time thinking I was watching their first fight so when I tallied up my card to a draw that tallied with the official verdict. Then I went looking for the second fight and realised that was the one I had just watched. But the official scoring on that one was unanimous and wide to Davey. So seeing your card is somewhat reassuring. Either that, or we did watch the first fight after all. Confused. Anyway, here's my card: Chuck Davey v Carmen Basilio 2 1 10-9 (close) 2 9-10 (Basilo landed some decent right hand leads) 3 10-9 4 9-10 (Basilio landed some bombs; Davey took them well and kept up his pitty-patty offense) 5 10-9 (Davey the busier; when Basilio lands the punches look more impactful but he didn't land enough to take this round imo) 6 10-9 7 9-10 (scrappy but I thought the better punching came from Basilio) 8 10-9 (close) 9 9-10 10 9-10 Davey 95-95 Basilio
Yeah, it's all good either way. Keep posting your thoughts as it's always good to see people scoring and watching fights seriously and taking the time to post their thoughts on them in any level of detail. Agree with you on this one - not a classic!
Kind of funny, Jel. Hate it how this fight is wrongly labeled everywhere. Not sure how you got a draw, and I'm heavily anti Davey and highly pro Basilio.
I am currently working on other fights right now anyway: Satterfield vs. Johnson I Graham vs. Basilio I Carter vs. Salas III Davey vs. Graziano Marciano vs. Walcott I Pep vs. Savoie Bratton vs. Miceli Pep vs. Chavez Charles vs. Bivins V Wallace vs. Dunlap Moore vs. Maxim I Giardello vs. Graham II Nardico vs. LaMotta Gavilan vs. Davey LaStarza vs. Layne Bratton vs. Portuguez Moore vs. Valdes I I have watched all of them, but have to type up my notes on them, and in some cases re-watch some rounds, or in a case or two, the whole fight. I'm way behind.
I agree with your scoring a lot more than the judges in this one. I had it a draw. Could have gone in a close decision either way. But the judges had it one sided which makes me wonder. I enjoyed the fight because Basilio made it a good fight. Thanks for posting.
