He broke ribs with that hook. Even knocked a few guys out by going downstairs which is hard to do. Definitely a hard hitting guy
What you’re looking at is called a reverse hook — or at least that’s what Victor Valle, who trained Cooney, called it. It’s a tap hook to the head to set up a kill shot to the liver/ribs. You’ll notice Mickey Ward (who was with Valle for a time) also used it and I think Billy Costello (although not as frequently), another Valle guy. I knew Randall Yonker a bit back in the day. He fought out of Alabama but had trained under Valle in New York and he used it frequently and said it was a Valle thing. I’m surprised no one else has ever really adopted it as a weapon. For whatever reason it’s devastating when you get the cadence right.
