    Ricky Hatton v Luis Collazo

Watched Luis Collazo fighting last night and heard the announcers talk about the controversial decision with Ricky Hatton and thought I would have a look as I did not see it first time around for whatever reason.

    Round 1: 10-8 Hatton (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 4: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 5: 10-9 Collazo
    Round 6: 10-9 Collazo
    Round 7: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 8: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 9: 10-9 Collazo
    Round 10: 10-9 Collazo
    Round 11: 10-9 Hatton
    Round 12: 10-9 Collazo

Total: 115-113 Hatton (actual scores: 115-112, 115-112 and 114-113 all for Hatton)

No bad scores here, just a good close fight. Hatton's aggression against Collazo's counter-punching made it a tight encounter. And any tight encounter is going to cause the opposing corner and the audience some grief. But Hatton ground out the win, despite some dodgy moments in the 12th.

Collazo is one slick customer and very pleasing to the eye. A real competitor.

    Devon Alexander v Lucas Matthysse

I watched Alexander this past weekend in what should be his last bout as he lost to an up and comer with 13 fights. I've never really been a fan of his but one of the announcers mentioned his bout with Lucas Matthysse and I was a fan of Matthysse's. So here we go.

    Round 1: 10-9 Alexander
    Round 2: 10-9 LM
    Round 3: 10-9 LM
    Round 4: 10-8 LM (scores a knockdown)
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Alexander
    Round 7: 10-9 LM
    Round 8: 10-9 LM
    Round 9: 10-9 Alexander
    Round 10: 10-9 LM

Total: 97-93 Matthysse (actual scores: 96-93 Matthysse, 96-93 and 95-94 both for Alexander for a split win for Devon Alexander)

There were some close rounds, but I didn't think there was much doubt that Matthysse took this. However, Harold Lederman only had Matthysse winning by a point, so I must concede that the closeness of some rounds could be interpreted either way. I was simply more assured on my card, as I'm sure the judges were too. Not an unexciting fight, but on the otherhand, not a very exciting one either. If you're looking for slam-bang, this ain't it.

Mike Rossman v Victor Galindez II

    Round 1: 10-9 Rossman
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Galindez
    Round 4: 10-9 Galindez
    Round 5: 10-9 Galindez
    Round 6: 10-9 Galindez
    Round 7: 10-9 Galindez
    Round 8: 10-9 Galindez
    Round 9: 10-9 Galindez
Rossman retires on his stool after 9 completed rounds claiming a broken right hand

Total through 9 completed rounds: 89-83 Galindez (actual scores: 87-84, 88-83 and 87-84 all for Galindez)

A terrific fight. Rossman started very well using his jab precisely. However, around the 3rd Galindez took the play away from him and never relinquished it. He did not play a waiting, counter-punching game like he did in their first bout. This time he went after Rossman and was a vicious animal in doing so. Pounding him relentlessly during the round and even after the round if you want to check out the fireworks at the end of the 4th round. Rossman tried but Galindez was not to be denied. He whipped himself into magnificent condition and came to regain his title.

I've been watching some fights from the "Underrated Heavyweight Fights" the last couple days.

First one was Mo Harris vs. Derreck Jefferson

Had no idea Mo Harris was 16 when he had his first pro fight. Harris was slick, but my god when he got hit he went down like he had been shot. Jefferson was a football player turned boxer and just kept coming forward and had a lot of heart. Fun Fight, I wonder what Harris could have been with a proper career and a better chin.

Is the Holmes vs. Harris fight worth tracking down? I can see why an old Holmes would have struggled with Harris.

The other fight with Clifford Etienne vs Lawrence Clay-Bey. Clay Bey did alright for himself for a guy that went to a gym to lose weight.

You could see Don Turner's imprints all over Etienne, as Etienne really did fight like a cruder Holyfield. He was brilliant at parts of this match with his combos and bodywork. It also helped that LCB was a sitting target most of the night. LCB hung out on the ropes and flat footed most of the match looking for one big punch. A couple times he landed, and it looked like it didn't take much to daze The Black Rhino, but I don't think he was really ever in serious trouble. This was a competitive one sided match, I gave LCB one round and maybe 2.

Harris was robbed in the Holmes fight, he was super young too when he fought Holmes. Harris is one of my favorite journeymen heavyweights, could look like a million bucks one minute then be out cold the next.

Siarhei Liakhovich 21-1 14 KOs (WBO #13) vs Lamon Brewster (33-2 29 KOs)(WBO heavyweight champion)

Fourth defense for Brewster after upsetting Wlad Klitchsko. He previously beat Kali Meehan, Andrew Golota, and Luan Krasniqi. Liakhovich coming off a win over 25-1 Dominick Guinn when that still meant something. His only loss was to one of my favorite heavyweight journeymen Maurice Harris.

    Round 1
Feeling out round, liakhovich with some nice rights to the body. Both guys trying to establish the jab. I think liakovich did just a little more

    10-9 liakovich(close)

    Round 2
Battle of the jabs for the most part with Liakhovich doing better than Brewster. Brewster manages a couple of nice rights but so does Liakhovich

    10-9 Liakhovich (close)
    20-18 Liakhovich

    Round 3
Liakhovich working behind an effective jab begins to launch really quick combos. Liakhovich pretty much ran away with this round
    10-9 Liakhovich
    30-27 Liakhovich

    Round 4
Besides a nice double jab landed by Brewster this is all Liakhovich. He's making Brewster miss almost everything by slipping or blocking almost everything Brewster is throwing while landing a nice consistent jab and quick combos mixed in with hard right hands to the body

    10-9 Liakhovich
    40-36 Liakhovich

    Round 5
First half of the round is like the previous two with Liakhovich doing his thing but then Brewster lands a few nice shots and Liakhovich in trouble, Brewster unloading on the ropes, landing some nice rights but missing about half of his bombs, with about 15 seconds left Liakhovich comes back and now Brewster is in trouble on the ropes! Round ends....early?

    10-9 Brewster
    49-46 Liakhovich

    Round 6
Liakhovich gives Brewster the slugfest he wants and both guys are trading. Liakhovich eventually gets the better of it and beats up Brewster in the corner with his quick hands. Round ends as Brewster comes back with a nice overhand right. By the way he's been doing it all fight but Liakhovich is landing some NASTY right hand body shots and he hit 5 or 6 really good ones this round and you can tell Brewster is feeling them

    10-9 Liakhovich
    59-55 Liakhovich

    Round 7
Pace has slowed as both guys have been working hard the last couple of rounds. Liakhovich doing well boxing and moving but then Brewster catches him and hurts him. Brewster's assault is stopped dead in its tracks for a moment when Liakhovich lands ANOTHER right hand to the body. Brewster regains his composure and hurts Liakhovich again. Brewster finally listens to his corner and digs uppercuts to Liakhovichs body, and down goes Liakhovich in the waning moments of the 7th, he gets back up though. Nice comeback from Brewster, he looked almost done at the end of 6

    10-8 Brewster
    67-65 Liakhovich

    Round 8
Things have slowed somewhat again but both guys landing bombs. Liakhovich doing the better work but still getting cracked from Brewster from time to time.

    10-9 Liakhovich (close)
    77-74 Liakhovich

    Round 9
Liakhovich boxing well and catches Brewster when he fakes that right to the body and lands a nice overhand right. Brewster in trouble and is wobbling goes back go the ropes. Lialhovich unloading but is smothering his shots and missing a lot of them. Brewster fighting off the ropes has his moments but Liakhovich is still getting through. This is a brutal one

    10-9 Liakhovich
    87-83 Liakhovich

    Round 10
Liakhovich dominates the round with his boxing. He's landing that jab over and over while stifling almost all of Brewster's offense.

    10-9 Liakhovich
    97-92 Liakhovich

    Round 11
Liakhovich once again wins the round with the jab. Basically a repeat of round 10 just at a slower pace

    10-9 Liakhovich
    107-101 Liakhovich

    Round 12
Brewster is trying to get things going but Liakhovich is just able to counter almost everything he does. It's a real close round and I want to give it to Brewster but I think Liakhovich did just enough

    10-9 liakhovich(close)
    117-110 Liakhovich

Some of those close rounds could have gone to Brewster, so closer scores are fine with me. I had Liakhovich winning though in a tough fight with a lot of eb and flows. This is a Don't King card so I expect some sort of questionable judging.

    Final scores
    117-110
    115-113
    115-112 all Liakhovich

Wow I guess no tom foolery there. Pretty good fight, both guys took a beating but Brewster especially took a lot of shots. Liakhovich was looking pretty slick here, nice movement and defense and that jab couldn't miss. This would the beginning of the end for well both guys actually. Brewster would be KOd by Wlad in his next fight then go 2-2 and call it a career (winning against journey men and losing against Helenius and another heavyweight I don't really remember)

This should of been the start of a nice run for Liakhovich, but he would get KOd in his very next fight in the 12th round in a fight he was ahead on the cards against aged Shannon Briggs. He's still fighting remarkably but he is just a stepping stone at this point.

I know this isn't exactly a classic fight, but this was one I missed on Holmes' oldtimers tour, which I had always heard was disputed. So here we go, Larry Holmes vs. Maurice Harris

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Harris
    Round 3: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Harris
    Round 6: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 7: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 8: 10-9 Harris
    Round 9: 10-9 Harris
    Round 10: 10-9 Harris

97-95 Harris (actual scores: 96-95 and 96-94 Holmes and a 96-94 for Harris for a split win for Holmes)

I believe that Harris did deserve that decision. This was a jaded Holmes fighting on memory, but regardless of what Larry did in his youth, Harris should have got the nod here.

I’ll play Paul Harvey and give you the rest of the story on Clifford Etienne.

He was arrested in 2005 after a cocaine-fueled crime spree that included armed robbery of a check-cashing business, carjacking and kidnapping a woman and her children and attempted murder of a police officer.

He’s currently serving 105 years without possibility of parole (reduced from 160 due to a technicality in his sentencing) in state prison, presumably Angola, La., which has a reputation for being one of the hardest places to do hard time.

I actually deep dived on him after the fight. There's some semi recent articles about him. He's also now an artist that has sold some paintings I guess for pretty good money.
