Shavers probably hit harder with one punch

Tyson was much faster and a better finisher

Great post, except for the last sentence. There's no proof who hit harder, and we can never determine for sure. Take into consideration the fact that Shavers put everything he had behind the punch (thus leaving himself exposed in case he missed), while Tyson (and many other top pros) rarely did/do (unless they had their man hurt).

Tyson did not loose that much speed after he came out of jail, but his skillset degraded bigtime, especially his defense.
I also don't see him as the biggest puncher, but he hit very hard.

No proof of this. Remember that Shavers usually put all his bodyweight behind his punch, while Tyson rarely did.

Mike Tyson was by far the better puncher out of Shavers and Foreman. Both were sloppy ugly punchers with crappy often times exploited delivery systems.

Mike required much less room much less time and had much more openings too land.
The difference in power is negligible between the three. It’s like choosing between three high powered rifles, they all work it’s the one that lands that matters.

That's not the only reason shavers had devastating power, he was heavy handed too.

Many people who sparred with or fought him said even light taps would make them wince and that his knuckles were incredibly hard and felt like they were being hit by someone with brass knuckles.

Combine that with his ruthless fighting style putting everything into his punches and the unique blend of weight shifting and explosive power and it's no wonder shavers developed that reputation.

As far as Tyson's power vs shavers, both of their common opponents (holmes and Tillis) said shavers. When Thomas was asked who hit harder between Tyson and Morrison, he picked Morrison. When Holyfield was asked who hit him the hardest, he picked Foreman and he fought Tyson twice. In fact, several opponents picked people other than Tyson for the hardest hitter they faced.

But in the case if shavers, every single opponent whether they win or lost picks him. Joe Bugner picked shavers over Ali, Lyle, Frazier, and Cooper. Ken Norton and Young picked him and they fought all kinds of big punchers like Foreman, Lyle, Cooney.

If we're talking effectiveness it definitely goes to Tyson, but in terms of raw power, no, you can't really say Tyson is anywhere near #1. Tyson not only had better technique, he also put together combinations and many of his knockouts were when the opponent didn't see the shot coming from his blinding hand speed/odd angles etc. Shavers just beat the **** out of you or nailed you so hard you concussed. The fact their KO% are so close despite Tyson being the much better fighter with more natural talent is very telling.

Shavers had a pretty bad delivery system, I agree.

Foreman I completely disagree. There are many breakdowns on YouTube explaining how he would walk guys into shots. Very subtle stuff. One of the biggest myths about Foreman is that all his knockouts came from just swinging for the fences with big hayemakers and if you actually watch his fights, this is rarely the case and he had very good accuracy and timing.

Just no, 70s Foreman was horrid watch Young, Ali vs Foreman and tell me he was subtly accurate he never caught a singe elusive boxer his own size and finished them. It is partially a myth only spread by casuals- he could be clever too a point and had a few tricks he had taught to him by Saddler but for the most part he beat up on Frazier and Norton two guys who are not defensive wizards at all and were not known for there chins.

During Shavers time there were many hardcore chins boxers such as Holmes, Tex Cobb, Muhammad Ali, Ron Stander, etc etc etc. Tyson is just the same, when he encounter Jose Ribalta, Razor Ruddock, Tony Tucker, etc etc He can't even knock them down either

Botha disagrees. Tyson hit like a truck...even when he was slow and in bad shape.

It was knee injuries that ultimately did him in. Hard to generate power without legs.
