How do you think Wilder will be remembered in say 20 years time. While at the moment its clear he is a limited boxer with freakish power who very nearly ko'ed Fury and has a near perfect ko record from every other fight in his career. While his record is limited in depth, he has 2 KO victories over a talented solid guy in Ortiz. Tyson and many other greats from previous eras are often IMO hyped and would struggle against the current crop of hws, but people dont remember flaws with time. Do you think he is going to be a bit of a hyped myth in the future?
As someone who never mentally recovered from the Fury ass whoopin and as someone who wasted his career beating cans. But a big puncher nonetheless, actually even his punching power will be questioned in the future due to his thin resume. Hell it's being questioned right now
When Ortiz is your best win and Bermane Stiverne probably your 2nd best win then it's not something that stands out among the pantheon of greats. He'll be seen as the protected paper champion he is, who never tried to unify and rarely fought a mandatory. Was he the worst champion ever, no not by a long shot but he was far from being a great and probably not even a hall of famer.
In 20 years? Hall of Famer. All-time great. Arguably the greatest puncher in boxing history. Two-time WBC Champion. World Heavyweight Champion. Double-digit heavyweight title defenses in his first reign. Half as many in his second reign. Retired after winning in his 50th pro bout Final record: 48-1-1 (47 Kos) Except for one loss in 2020, which he avenged, Wilder was the one constant, dependable, decade-long champ from 2015 to 2025 when the other belts were bouncing around seemingly every year between flawed fighters like Martin, Joshua, Chagaev, Browne, Ruiz, Parker, Usyk, Charr, Bryan, Hunter, Hrgovic, Joyce and Yoka. Hated by British fans during his heyday, particularly when he swept the biggest British boxing names of that era - Fury, Whyte and Joshua - in consecutive fights. Like the Swedes with Floyd Patterson, though, they grew to admire the "villain" who they spent years gleefully hating. They missed him when he was gone. Because nothing was more exciting in heavyweight boxing during the late teens and early 20s than when the bell rang for a Deontay Wilder title fight. Something like that. (LOL)
Well, so far, five years as WBC Heavyweight Champion, 10 successful title defenses, knocked out everyone he's fought as a pro in the last 12 years except Fury, who he's fighting next. Eight straight years rated in the Ring top 10. The longest reigning champ of the last decade. That one.
It's a little too soon to judge that isn't it, my friend? He hasn't fought since. But I like your post otherwise.
He'll be remembered as being up there with Shavers as the hardest punching heavyweight who ever lived. But also that he never seemed to beat anybody even really good.
When you’re still fighting the likes of Jason Gavern 30odd fights into your career and then going on to have fights against the likes of Arthur Szpillka and Gerald Washington then most fighters could have records which would show them as being a hard punching heavyweight.
Thats just how i feel he'll be seen, because i just don't think he'll beat Fury. And then he'll have to work his way up, but by the time he can take his belts back he'll be old, and he'll probably get destroyed even worse, he can fight top 15 guys but from what i cant tell Wilder doesn't want to fight any top guys besides Fury and he's fighting Fury to avenge his loss. Maybe he will beat Fury, who knows.
