Fully detached retina would be career ending. HW Oscar Rivas has had retina surgery but had his fight against Washington years later cancelled when he failed a pre-fight eye test. Even post surgery there can be residual issues. Depending on the location the procedure is different, and a high tear will likely involve gas injected into the eye to position the repaired retina. It then takes 2 weeks to be fully absorbed and a couple of months being monitored. Sugar Ray Leonard cancelled a title defense because of a semi detached retina and took two years off.
