Bottom line, he was nothing special as a puncher.

He never stopped anybody who was an elite fighter at the time.

Valuev never fought anybody in the class of Baer.

Haye, Holyfield, Liakhovich, Chagaev, McCline, Barrett, Etienne, Donald are all bums now? Noted. I learn new and interesting 'facts' every day here.

Baer sucks, man. He was the Wilder of his day. His skills are sad. Luckily he was stronger than almost his entire class, and the guys that were bigger than him were woeful. Lest we forget this:

Valuev wasn't very good and for all his size he was surprisingly tentative and 'pecky' with his punches. Really didn't have particularly heavy hands either, though his sheer mass gave him some weight to his shots by default. His chin was good but only because his whole head was a gigantic mass of bone and so high up that it was difficult to leverage a proper punch onto. In his prime though his speed and workrate weren't awful, and he had a bit of craft that put him a notch above most freak fighters.

In terms of his record it wasn't terrible, but he had a lot of close and controversial decisions on there. The Ruiz and Holyfield fights weren't convincing in the slightest; in fact I thought he lost to Holyfield, and that was a 46 year old faded version that wouldn't go on to have another meaningful win in his career. Ironically I thought he deserved the nod over Haye, but I've never bothered to watch that fight more than once so I might be mistaken there.

Really don't know how he'd do against Louis's competition. I suspect he'd beat his fair share, but it'd be via awkward decision wins and attrition stoppages IMO rather than sheer bulldozing strength (which he didn't really possess). Valuev was a guy who belied his appearance.

Joe Louis never defended his title against Max Baer.

Louis defended against Tami Mauriello, Abe Simon, Tony Galento, Red Burman, Tony Musto, Buddy Baer, Gus Dorazio, Al McCoy, Arturo Godoy, Billy Conn, Tommy Farr, Johnny Paycheck, Lou Nova, Jack Roper, John Henry Lewis (in his last fight), Harry Thomas, Nathan Mann, Bob Pastor, Schmeling and Walcott.

The thread is Valuev vs. Joe Louis' title challengers.

Joe Louis didn't defend his title against Max Baer.

Louis defended against Tami Mauriello, Abe Simon, Tony Galento, Red Burman, Tony Musto, Buddy Baer, Gus Dorazio, Al McCoy, Arturo Godoy, Billy Conn, Tommy Farr, Johnny Paycheck, Lou Nova, Jack Roper, John Henry Lewis (in his last fight), Harry Thomas, Nathan Mann, Bob Pastor, Schmeling and Walcott.

How would Valuev do against them? OR, how would they do against Valuev.

Let me simplify this list for you.

His opponents who were actually relevant in the division, on the day of the fight, were Ruiz, Chagaev, and Haye.

    Two losses and one MD.

Now that might sound harsh, but if we are going to play the name dropping game, then the same applies to Louis's opponents. Then you have to give them credit for every name fighter on their resume, regardless of the circumstances.

It is by no means a given that Valuev would get past Braddock.

Carnera fought quite a few dead men walking and some with pulses probably lost cos they was paid to!
Look at some of the heavyweights Champs thru history, and see where most place PC. He just wasn't good at all.
