After easing through the Liston - Shavers thread i was a tad surprised at some of the seemingly large separation of Williams from Shavers. It's probably safe to say that Shavers has the more impressive higher end wins and both had their losses. He also came a lot closer to winning a title, twice. Williams tho was a tad unlucky not to receive a shot before he was shot so there remains a touch of mystery.

I'm going to make this poll only viewable after voting and to take any peer pressure off either way votes will also take after ".......... Billy Smith". Votes can be changed in case one of our smoother posters puts forth an overwhelmingly undeniable case.

I'm quite interested in how this one turns out. Who will receive the sweet sweet lurve of chok? Will Klomp sneak in under a different guise to pursue one of his favorite fighters? Is Williams more myth than man? Can Shavers get it done at contender level? Who is the least durable? Will it come down to who wants it more? Does Shavers have any fans passionate enough to launch into a spirited debate of his part?

John, this is a bloody good thread. And as it's early here and I'm starting work soon, I'm going to mull over it till later!

The interesting thing is if Earnie gets to tee off on an upright opponent standing right in front of him. Problem is Earnie eating a left hook before he can fire his own shots. Shaver's will not absorb this guys' punches. And when he dips he is walking the tightrope to get clipped or to launch his big right hand at a big target.

I think Earnie gets clipped first. But this would make for a great 3 fight series and neither is capable to go 3-0. And we might be talking a total of 15 rounds collectively for the trio of bouts.

We the fans really do not get too many brawler/big hitter matchups. Especially at heavy. Almost always it is a boxer as the opponent.

    It's tough to decide.
Williams was a big puncher with great handspeed, taller, better reach and arguably the better boxer.
Shavers was an even harder puncher. I think his chin was a tad better and he was more proven against other tough fighters/punchers.
All in all, I tend to Shavers, but it could go either way.

Dang, I thought this was a thread on the Earnie Shavers (not the mattress salesman, that's Ernie Shaver) ROY Williams fight. Then I saw contenders and I thought the thread was going with Earnie Shavers - CARL Williams as a fantasy fight. Then, oh yeah, CLEVELAND Williams.

After thinking this thru, I'm going Williams Ko early. Extremely early. Williams Gettin out fast, being first out of the blocks and striking out at Shavers before he has chance to settle. It could even be a 1 round Ko.

According to @choklab logic, Post gun-shot Williams beat Mel Turnbow, who beat Bob Stallings who beat a prime Shavers so this should be a walk in the park for Williams.

I think excluding power (even that's debatable imo) Williams was better in just about every way, bigger, faster, better boxer, etc. Chins are similar, both very underrated. I see Williams getting there first, landing the more meaningful shots and putting Shavers away early. BUT Shavers power is a HUGE wildcard, he's always one punch away from a victory and it's not like Williams was exactly Willie Pep when it comes to defense so an upset isn't out of the question.

Quite true Swag. Never know with big Ern s power. If can drop Holmes with his chin..!
But yes, I'll bet on Williams but be biteing my nails through out.

I agree. I'd be very nervous until that ref counts Shavers down for the ten count. That goes for almost any Shavers fight where I bet against Shavers.

I like the skills that Williams exhibits. He seems more technical and a better boxer than Shavers.

Shavers on the other hand hits harder for my money and seems tougher.

I wouldn't bet a plugged nickel on this fight, even though I lean towards Williams.
