The fight that never happened Keith Thurman vs Kell Brook. If they fought back in 2015 or 2016 pre GGG.
Can anyone explain why Brook's record is so weird? Fought Porter, then the next big name is Golovkin?!
I'm led to believe he had a lot of issues out of the ring, lack of discipline being the main one. It was a struggle to keep him in the gym and in shape in between fights. Plus a month or two after his fight with Porter he was stabbed multiple times.
Bit of bad luck, bit of poor decision making and management. He got stabbed not long after the Porter win, fought Dan who was poor but a mandatory, took Gavin soon after as an easy to make and easy to win in-house fight. After this I think he overestimated his own value and took too long making a good fight when his next poor quality mandatory in Bizier rolled around. Then he was due to finally have a good fight in a unification against Vargas when Brexit happened and the money side fell apart, then shortly after took the Golovkin fight. Also add in all the wasted time and energy chasing Khan.
He was stabbed in the leg shortly after winning the title against Porter. He then had 3 very 'soft' title defences before the Golovkin fight. I think the defense againts Jo Jo Dan after the stab wound was ok, but then Frankie Gavin afterwards was a bit of a disgrace, Gavin had no business getting a shot IMO. I think moving up to face Golovkin really came about because Chris Eubank Jr shat out of it, so Brook took a gamble by all accounts he was killing himself making 147 at the time - as to how much of the Golovkin matchup was on Hearn or Brook is anyone's guess. I tend to give Kell the benefit of the doubt, given the criticism he got for Gavin and then Kevin Bizier afterwards. But I think he would have been better avoiding GGG and either moving up to 154 or facing Spence without the orbital injury. I think psychoogically tyhe GGG loss was bad for Brook, and the weight yoyoing couldn't have been much better. Not that Spence might not still have beaten Brook, but I think it would have gone all 12 and been a v close SD eitherw ay.
50/50 type fight, the location of the bout will determine who gets the nod whether in the UK or US. Kell Brook gets a little overrated here on the site. Besides the Porter win which was a hard bout for Special K, Brook doesn't have any other legit wins.
