It's not really silly if a boxer is a draw and popular, it's just the way boxing works. Look at Tank Davis for example he did nothing to get a shot at Barrios at 140 yet could easily get a shot with Taylor the man at 140. Hell Ryan Garcia could get a fight with anyone in the world right now at 140 and147 if he showed interest in doing so. Boxing is a business and draws get fights and if you beat a draw you will get noticed.

 

Whether we agree with it or not, he was an undefeated multi-weight champion who was being talked up in those terms. Marketing and promoting sell fights. You're confusing his actual ability (which degraded over time due to unprofessionalism, mostly) with his perceived ability at the time of the Maidana fight. There was no reason to predict such a decline, it just happens to some boxers because they don't look after themselves or work on their game.

 

Doesn't matter what his ranking was. I'm sure there were guys ranked below him who were far more deserving or guys not even ranked by the WBO who were as well. It's hardly an outrageous opinion. Most people don't seem to realise that Floyd is the older fighter whose style requires lightning reflexes and excellent movement. Floyd definitely didn't have the same reflexes or speed of movement in the ring and his hands were wrecked by this point as everybody knows. Pacquiao was definitely shopworn too, but his major problem is that his power didn't really carry to 147. Mayweather was relying on his ring IQ, timing and impeccable shot selection to get him through fights at this point. He retired from professional boxing at the right time. It's a strong rebuttal to the opinion amongst some boxing fans, those who prefer their boxers to block punches with their faces mostly, that Mayweather waited Pacquiao out, when it would have been better for Mayweather to fight him 5 years or so before that. Even if he had fought him a couple of years earlier he would have had more to use in the ring. It's Arum who held up this fight, and the sh it between him and Mayweather.
