Could Canelo react Roy Jones' punches?

Roy had one shot knockout power in either hand. The truth is, we just don’t know how aggressive and confident Canelo would have been against a peak version of Roy. The only time Canelo saw a fighter who was comparable, was against Floyd when he was young and pre-prime.

Canelo couldn’t have waited patiently for one shot to end things. He has a small reach and Roy had insane speed with his great athleticism and unorthodox style. He’d have been so difficult to time.

I don’t think he’d ever have caught Roy and then finished him.

Regarding the Calzaghe fight, Calzaghe knew that Roy was a shot fighter at that point. He literally said that on numerous occasions, even before they fought.

You can’t even compare that version of Roy to the ones we’re talking about here from 1994-1996.

Calzaghe never had the confidence to pursue a fight with Roy back in the day, and even admits that he doesn’t know if he could have beaten him at SMW.

Again, you’ve also got to question if Canelo would have put a prime version of Roy under pressure.

 

Could Canelo have landed those power shots though?

We’re looking here at prime version of Roy Jones who beat James Toney at 25.

The versions who fought Tarver and Johnson were a weight above, 10 years older and simply not the same fighter.

You simply don’t know if Canelo will get knocked out cold. Canelo is extremely tough with a great chin. But fighters can lose punch resistance when they get older, depending on their circumstances.

Roy wasn’t knocked out until he’d dropped back from HW in his mid 30’s.

 

And how could Canelo have connected with that same punch that would have put him in that vulnerable position in the first place?

 

Realistically, that’s how I think that it would have played out.

If Roy had’ve come out like that against Canelo, how would Canelo have countered him?

He had a small reach and has nowhere near the speed.

If Roy had’ve come out super aggressive like that, the likelihood is that Canelo would have covered up.

He’s never even seen anybody like a prime Roy at SMW.

 

GG has a 70” reach, with little head movement.

As great as he is, he’s very easy to hit.

Roy would have tagged him very easily.

He’d had to have caught up to Roy in order to have knocked him out.

How likely would that have been?

There’s nothing on GG’s resume for you or anyone else to have favoured him over a prime version of Roy.

 

He was never hit flush at that weight by a banger like GGG,Roy would take GGG`s shots a lot worse than how GGG would absorb Roy`s power.

 

No, Roy use to miss a lot of shots and GGG has far better fundamentals than most fighters that fought Roy.

 

Canelo would be the quickest counter puncher Roy would have met and Roy was awful in his first fight v Griffin.

 

No way could Roy have sparked Canelo with one shot Canelo proved his chin v GGG, nobody Roy knocked out ever went the distance with a great finisher like GGG.

 

Roy got caught a lot and only didn`t get caught more because his punch out-put was so low.

 

Roy would have tagged GG with ease.

Bigger reach, insane hand speed, pin point accuracy and timing, against a guy who has little head movement and who’s there to be hit.

 

GGG has better fundamentals than Roy had.

 

But he wasn’t was he?

It’s a complete and utter myth.

The only reason people say that he was awful, is because Griffin caused him issues, and people weren’t used to seeing it.

He wasn’t awful.

It was a good, competitive fight, and Roy had turned things in his favour in the last third of the fight.

Canelo hasn’t got great speed, he’s got a small reach, and Roy at SMW was a phenom.
