Looking back at the White Wolf, do you consider him to be an underrated or overrated fighter? How would a prime Liakhovich do in today’s heavyweight landscape?
Appropriately rated probably. That being said.... His war with Brewster is probably the best HW fight since the 90s, so that definitely deserves more attention! I think it's safe to say that at his peak he would be in the mix today, barring the top guys he has a shot against most in the division.
Wow, I thought he hung up the gloves after the Ruiz Jr. fight, had no idea he has fought 3 times since then.
Him and guys like Roy Jones, and Enzo Maccarinelli, are guys that fought way too long, and were brutally knocked out numerous times, I hope the 3 of them are doing ok, because they were subjects of highlight reel brutal knockouts. Evander Holyfield fought too long but he was mainly getting decisioned due to lack of reflexes.
Liakhovitch had two long periods of inactivity during his peak years, thanks to his promoter Don King. He might have done better against Shannon Briggs (he was doing okay for 11 rounds) but it's not good for a boxer to have only one fight in three years.
The title of the worst might go to Martin, by the way he won it and the way he lost it. I think that he had a good chance to win that bout against Glazkov if things panned out normally, though. And I would also give Martin a great chance, and even put him favourite, to beat Liakhovich.
I wish he and Briggs had rematched, because he was clearly the better fighter, and deserved better than having their rivalry decided on his total brain-fart entropy in literally the last minute.
