People on a thread are picking a prime Roy Jones to beat Canelo, but how would Canelo fare against te fighter that gave Jones his biggest test in the 90`s in their first fight when Roy was DQ`d? Canelo`s reach is 70.5 inches and Griffin`s was only 70 inches yet Roy couldn`t out-jab Griffin.
Griffin would have given any version of Canelo fits that night. He was so elusive and dialed in for that first fight vs RJJ. I don't know, I may have to lean slightly to Griffin, certainly to win rounds and be ahead on the cards. But Canelo like RJJ could at any time catch Griffin and explode on him. The difference is if Griffin took a knee, Canelo wouldn't have made the mistake of hitting him when he was down like RJJ did.
Let’s say that 90% of people think that Canelo would have beaten Griffin. What would that mean to you? Roy vs Canelo would have been a completely different fight.
I think it would have been a technical fight like Griffin-Toney. Canelo’s great, but I don’t see him destroying Griffin at all. Qawi would also have been interesting.
We don't know Canelo's potential at 175. He has only one fight. But, if you can't outjab Canelo, you lose. Griffin has the same reach with Canelo and because of that, power punch quality would be key factor imo. The only fighter who dominated Canelo as a power punch was Mayweather.
I think Griffin would be able to out slightly out-jab Canelo, and the thing with Griffin was he was slippery, he had the ability to avoid shots and counter punch which would give Canelo problems. Also Griffin wasn't a big target, particularly to the body, he would make it hard for Canelo to land body shots. He's stylistically difficult for Canelo, I wouldn't put it past Canelo to figure him out and get him in trouble like RJJ did, but it wouldn't be easy and it would probably take Canelo a long time before he got him in trouble like it took RJJ. As far as Mayweaather "dominating" Canelo in terms of power punching, that's just flat out not true. The power punches landed were very even, it was Mayweather out-jabbing Canelo that won him the fight, not by out power punching him. Canelo landed more hooks and more body shots on Floyd than Floyd landed on him. Floyd was working behind the jab all night, and mixing in the occasional straight right hand. You're right that if you can't out jab Canelo, you lose. The jab was the main key to Mayweather's victory, clearly.
Yes. We need to see him more of him at LHW first. Hopefully, he’ll venture back into the division if he beats Plant.
Canelo`s punch technique is far better than Floyd`s,no way could Floyd have gone toe to toe with GGG.
