I rewatched Lewis v Mercer yesterday. A real war and slugfest where Lewis took bombs from every angle from Merciless that seemed far more powerful than the blows taken against McCall and Rahman that knocked him out. Forget the fight with McCall in which Lewis was still quite young and his jaw had not yet been properly tested but considered in his career he took severe blows from people like (not in order) Holyfield, Ruddock, Tua, Grant, Morrison, Tyson, Briggs and Klitschko without ever going to the canvas its not hazardous saying that the KO inflicted on him by Rahman was really due to a lucky punch and not having taken that fight seriously and that then Lewis chin is one of the best ever in the HWs.

    Thoughts?

Lewis's iron chin is a secret that cannot be allowed to get out.

    Is this April Fool's?

Terrific ATG fighter, but not an ATG chin by any stretch. Perhaps at or maybe even a bit above Norton level (btw, Lewis wouldn't have survived flush shots by Cooney, Shavers, or Foreman, either).

Ken Norton wouldn't be taking flush shots from Tua like Lewis did LOL. Chinnox Lewis would beat all of those guys though so it doesn't matter

But did Tua hit as hard as Shavers and Foreman? I personally don't think so, overall I thought Tua was mightily overrated. No offense intended.

And...just asking...did Tua actually LAND flush on Lewis during that fight?

WOULD Lewis beat prime Foreman? Kind of hard to imagine that. Tua, McCall, Morrison, Rahman...NONE of those guys could tie prime Foreman's shoes. Just my opinion.

Can't imagine any of those other guys stopping undefeated Joe Frazier...

Tua hit hard enough to send Ken Norton to the shadow relm just like every big puncher he faced.

And yes he did. Especially this huge leaping left hook.

WOW NICE! Thanks for the school, my friend. Yes, Norton would have been at least badly staggered, while Lewis (my jaw is still dropping) took it like a mah fah.

He's definitely got a better beard than Norton and yes he could survive flush shots from those fighters but not too many of them I would think. I won't go over Lewis's 2 defeats but there are reasons for them. I would say it's at B level but no better than that.

I will grant you that it was better than many claim, but I think that we have to say that it was not among the best in heavyweight history.

A case can be made that when highly focused Lewis was near unbeatable .. he fought everybody that would fight him, everybody .. his resume from the 90's is as packed as anyones .. no doubt he came into both the McCall and Rahman fights overconfident and unfocused .. he also throughly avenged both loses .. Lewis was an all time great fighter and the best super heavyweight by far ..
