If Caleb Plant was to beat Canelo, and in the potential rematch, what would this do to the boxing landscape? Does Plant become "face of boxing" and start being a huge A side draw? Forcing guys like Andrade, Charlo, Bivol etc meet him at 168? Does someone like Ortiz Jr or Tank Davis take over as a more marketable "face of boxing" Say Canelo loses in a rematch, what's next for him? 160 again?
Im hyped for this one. I genuinely think caleb plant has the style that Canelo doesnt do well against. Its going to be interesting to see how well Canelo adjusts to the style of Plant. We'll see.
Canelo will have to lose more than a few bouts to get eclipsed so badly. If Plant were to win and capitalise on it then things might be different, but he hasn't so far despite being almost 30.
I think it would be another Taylor vs Hopkins scenario, almost exactly. It's not a 0% chance that this would happen either, you can't write off someone with a size and speed advantage. I don't know what Plant would do after, I assume the same thing he's doing now but for more money. I think the only thing that would get him in the ring with Benavidez is if DB was the undisputed champ. It would probably hurt Canelo a bit but he came back strong from the last loss and I think he still has enough drive to do it again. Meanwhile a lot of the young guns (Teofimo, DB, Ryan Garcia) have stumbled lately, so many the spotlight would find Ortiz Jr, but I doubt it. If he beat Crawford that could do it, that's a big task though.
I cannot think of a single PPV star who at 29 years of age was still an obscure boxer like Caleb Plant.
It's not his fault that he can't get the fights, promoters are just looking for the next short Mexican ginger because that's what the public wants.
How many rounds do you think plant has to win clear to get a dec? 10? Will 10 get him a win or draw? Or do you just think he needs a knockout?
This is going to be a very tough fight for Canelo. Aside from being the bigger man, Caleb Plant is highly skilled and if Canelo isnt at his best, Plant can cause the upset here.
I don't think Plant has enough pop in his punches to keep Canelo at bay to be honest. I think Plant will look fairly good for 5 or 6 rounds but will crumble once he gets hurt. He's never really faced enough adversity in his boxing career as of yet and he's a bit of an unknown quantity when it comes to how durable he really is because he hasn't tested himself at this elite level before. If Plant had more power in his punches i'd give him a much better chance. I just don't think Canelo will respect him enough. Plant is no Lomachenko where he can land multiple punches with his superior timing and accuracy to hurt and beat Canelo. I don't think it will go the distance and i think he'll hit the canvas and not fully recover. I think he needs a HECK of a lot of luck where he knocks down Canelo early and gets a lot of momentum and only then i think he could win. That's the only real scenario in how i could see him winning. A boxer who is tough with a decent punch who can fight on the outside and on the inside can beat Canelo. Caleb Plant is not that boxer.
I think Canelo cuts off the ring pretty well these days. Canelo looked at his best vs. Saunders when he used double jabs to drive Billy into corners and set up right hands that he put all his weight in. With adjustments, I think that tactic will also work against Plant.
There has only been one boxer who a single loss MIGHT have lessened their drawing power by any appreciable amounts, and that's because he tied his marketing strategy to his lack of losses. Canelo losing won't hurt his standing as "The Man" in boxing (and really combat sports with Conor McGregor's continual fall from grace). Also...why are we entertaining the idea that Caleb Plant will win this fight? Yes, 2021 has been the year of crazy upsets, but it's been upsets of inactive big names taking on active guys. Canelo has NOT been inactive.
I don't think its out of the realm of possibility that Plant could win! do I think he WILL win? no. Plant is fast with good combos and fair footwork. If he can get in and get out with out taking to much return fire hes got a chance. I think Canelo's output is on the lower side, as he seems to be relying heavily on power at 168, that could backfire if Plant fires off enough combos, and being on Fox, you would think that the judges would actually be on Plants side if anything. I think Plant wins majority of the early rounds but gets taken out late, if it goes the distance Plant COULD have a shot if he can execute his game plan.
