We are not talking about very young and unpolished pro. We're talking about a guy who never fought pro fight and wasn't anything at amateur.

Baer would take his head off his body.

Baer doesn't look skilled, but he beat skilled fighters and he knew how to fight. Johnny_B never went to ring against someone as good as Baer opponents, let alone Sharkey.

Just look at Olympic track and field records from the 20's. Far weaker than modern standards (and there is a lot of factors that make comparisons over time in track and field very different than boxing), but still way beyond "guy who ****s about in the gym" level.

I think Johnny can match this looking more solid. Of course Carnera has more size adv. than him, thats a true argument.

In all seriousness, maybe if he'd have stayed at it Johnny B might have amounted to something in the sport. Every Champion started somewhere.

But I can't favour someone who left the amateur game aged 16 over a former HW champ.

Maybe one day Johnny B will send us a video of him in an amateur fight against a noteworthy opponent, we can better ascertain his chances (assuming he isn't just trolling)

There’s actually a great thread that breaks down the “why” of the better times in track and field and everything has to do with better equipment apparently. I’m no expert on the subject but maybe someone here is that can pull that thread up

Looking nice without opponent wouldn't give him any chances against Sharkey.

That's a factor, but it's more complex than that. There was certainly real improvement, but there was a big shift from amateurs to professionals in track and field that didn't happen in boxing.

Plus if you focus on the olympics, rather than records, it gets distrorted, because the earliest olympics didn't attract the best athletes, the 1904 one in particular being a joke.

Oliver McCall was confident that Louis would beat the Klitschkos when I asked him in person at the gym.
    But what does he know.

Foreman believed old time HWs were as good if not better than the modern fighters.
    But what does he know.

Ali rated Marciano as one of the best ever, even better than Frazier.
    But what does he know.

Manny Stewart criticized Marciano for his size, but not for his technique. He called his technique "cute," and deceptive.
    But what does he know.

Compared to the unaccomplished youngsters in your gym, whom you have a vested interest in pushing your own boxing acumen onto, these people who practiced the sport at the highest echelon don't know ****.

I thought you said you outweighed him by 60lbs. I'm no mathematician but Sharkey would need to weigh 160-170? I'm suddenly impressed by him. Middleweight fighting all those heavyweights.

Actually, I say I am no mathematician which actually isn't that true. I did maths at school until I was 16 and have done a bit of sudoku at least once a week since and I'm pretty sure that I could come up with the theory of relativity given that I'm about 100 years younger than Einstein and am also about 8" taller.

Sorry, I've come to this thread late so just trying to catch up.

Now, Johnny_B is a legend obviously but I was just wondering who the **** this Jack Sharkey character is.

    Johnny_b, Johnny_b!
    Does whatever a boxer can.
    He has the superior size,
    Destroys champs, just like flies.
Look out! Here comes the Johnny_b!
    Is he strong? Listen, Bud!
    He's got championship blood.
Can he weave like a thread?
    He'll hit you overhead.
Hey there, there goes the Johnny_b!

    In the chill of night,
At the scene of the fight
    Like a streak of light
    He explodes just in time
    Johnny_b, Johnny_b
    Legend eliminator Johnny_b
    Wealth and fame he's ignored
    ESB likes are his reward
To him, life is a great big bang-up
    Wherever there's a hang-up
    You'll find the Johnny_b!

I remember the now defunct WCW used to have a wrestler called Johnny B Badd which had a catchy theme song.
