On Ebay you don't have to bid, read the description of item of the Boxing Golden Years 1930's from newspapers clippings. with pic. Enjoy.

Very interesting article, although I didn't understand all the details. Is there a source for the article? Elsewhere it was also stated that Henry Armstrong did not want to fight Davey Day a second time. Why was Davey Day so disadvantaged? Just bad luck, in the wrong place at the wrong time and other cash cows (like Barney Ross) or were there other reasons? Indeed, great stuff for a book!

By the way, maybe the only advantage of the alphabet belts is that individual talents are less disadvantaged (at least if it's a crooked business).

    Hi Yoda,
Did you read the Lounge thread, Who were the top ten Lt. & Wel. of all Time, yesterday. Everybody in Chicago and New York and elsewhere where Mr. Day fought, knew how great he was! Check out the Library Of Congress of Davey Day being interviewed by Nelson Algren renown writer, it was worthy enough to make it into LOC. Thanks for sending the article to the Boxing Forum. I don't know how to do it, I guess I am too old.

    No problem Ron,
I read that Davey Day was one of the last great Jewish fighters. What an intriguing time for boxing. All kinds of population groups had their own boxing idols + all the local boxing heroes. I'd like to read more about it. I have enough other things to do though and I am not a native speaker. Thus, I always need a little longer.

    that's great stuff Ron,

man, if ever there is any doubt with respect to just how good and how serious a threat Day was to all his other 'historical greats', well that Cartoon REPORT is the only piece of Documented evidence you'd ever need, in tow with his Ratings and Reports of his Title Status.

as I've said many times, with the 'known' Feared & Cheated Fighters, Boxing History could be rewritten.

it's not understanding Ron, it's RECORDED HISTORY, it is Written, it is Documented, it is there for all to see.

that's the beauty of the Internet, we once took peoples word and sometimes that word was questioned and belittled at times, until someone who was there or in the know came along and said, "Yeah that's right, or no it's not quite like that.

But now, with the Internet, we can ALL SEE the ACTUAL REPORTS...

it is the absolute best way to set the record straight...

especially along with Ratings, Title Status, Fight Reports - Robberies or Politicking in Negotiations, Commentaries from Top Reporters, Commentaries from Top Fighters and Opponents, I mean that is precisely what is required in any Legal Dispute - Multiple Documented Evidence - the FACTS, are all the Proof the Judges and People need.

No understanding necessary Ron, just Investigative Research, good work.

Unfortunately, there is no book about Davey Day. I think there is also only one book about the great Benny Leonard (an old one written by Nat Fleischer). Perhaps there is something about him in the book: "Stars in the Ring: Jewish Champions in the Golden Age of Boxing: A Photographic History" by Mike Silver. It sounds promising and I wanna check it out later. I don't know if it says anything about the crooked business and the disadvantages of Davey Day. However, my bookshelf is full of too many unread books yet. Now I'm reading "In the ring with Jack Dempsey" which is quite an interesting tome.

Stars in the Ring is an excellent book. I've corresponded several times with my friend Mike Silver, who told me that Davey Day is The Real Uncrowned Champion, and in the next book he writes will give Davey more of a mention. Benny Leonard said, Davey is a smart boxer,he doesn't dance around and waste any energy nor throwing punches in the air, like so many other boys do. He aggressively moves in with his chin sunk into his chest and he can really paralyze you with a punch. The take away difficulty of all sportswriters is to not make a comparison of Davey's prowess to his stablemate Barney Ross. I have letters from Jimmy McLarnin telling me that Davey Day if wasn't in the stable with Ross he'd Champion as early as 1934 and beyond. Ray Arcel (letter) said in 1990, it was pleasure being around Davey and if he was fighting today he'd beat everybody. Sam Tub sportswriter and announcer of the Henry Armstrong vs. Barney Ross match, Davey fought on the same card beaitng Norment Quarles. Sam Tub said over the radio (which I have the recording of) "Davey Day is more cagey and hits harder than his stablemate Barney Ross. By the way Jack Dempsey cost Davey a million dollars, making Sammy Angott the Champion, saying Day lost by one point, who was hired by Sammy's own manager Honest Charlie Jones, paying all of Dempsey's expenses to come in from NY and be the sole referee and judge. The Ky. Boxing Commission shelved the Boxing team judges and never ever permit an out of Towner to be a referee, and to be both judge and executioner is beyond belief. Also, Dempsey fee was est. $7000.00. Davey was guaranteed $5000.00 and was the 8/5 favorite. Dempsey was known as a big time gambler, another reason not to allow him to officiate in any boxing matches. Ray Arcel himself said Dempsey is a crook and makes boxing look bad. I have more info of conversations before the fight, when Dempsey came up to (room ) visit Pian, Winch and Davey, and will post it another time.
