If every boxer fought like Hamed, would it be sustainable?

Ingle taught unorthodox footwork patterns with tape on the floor to school them which ways to move. Naz added his own athletic touches (and power). Johnny Nelson is probably more of a ‘textbook’ Brendan Ingle fighter, if one can use his name and ‘textbook’ in the same sentence.

Someone once remarked, “Ingle’s fighters even walk to the gym backwards.”

It works, to whatever degree it does, because it’s unorthodox and thus harder to prepare for because the fighters zig when you expect them to zag, and punch from odd angles. Fighting them is like getting a pit bull to do arithmetic when you say ‘attack.’

So if everyone did it, the antidotes, counters and general plan to defeat that style would get worked out … creating, presumably, a new style (which would probably be orthodox boxing).

Also, if every single fighter fought that way they couldn’t all win or all lose. Certain fighters who grasp the system best and have the most physical advantages (power, speed, chin, conditioning, etc. … the old reliables) would thrive and those who didn’t have those advantages or just never took to this odd approach would suffer.

Muhammad Ali and Roy Jones Jr, I suspect, would thrive. Joe Louis and Alexis Arguello, probably less so.

(And what would an Ingle southpaw look like? Did he train any lefties?)

One of your thoughts was particularly interesting-- that this kind of equilibrium would favor guys like Ali and Jones. Presumably, it would just be considered "obvious" by coaches and fans that boxing is a game for guys with crazy reflexes, in the same way that Sumo is a game for overweight, huge men and point karate is a game for beanpole tall guys with long limbs.

I wonder what athletic type, if any, orthodox boxing favors?

    1. I’m an idiot.

    2. With his angles and such he might as well have been orthodox.

    But thanks and point taken.

Youre a terrific poster, definitely NOT an idiot. We all forget stuff once in awhile, everyone does it.

Not sure if it would help or hurt the sport. But I think it might make for some exciting fights!

Thanks. I forgot something once but it was so long ago I don’t even remember what it was.

I was definitely brain dead on that one.

Herol Graham and Johnny Nelson were also southpaws.

A better question would have been if Ingle ever trained an orthodox fighter lol.
