Whatever shape Toney is in, I think he loses. That's my point. Seems there are more people who agree with mine than yours.

What was the best version of Giardello you've seen, out of curiosity?

Him, I meant. The idea being of course, that I still believe that even if we are cherry-picking and choosing only the very best version of these guys, Giardello still wins it. All he refers to is Toney here, almost dismissive of Giardello, which leaves me wondering just how much of him he's actually seen.

you have been kind of discredited because you referred to an inconsistently conditioned Toney. that is strictly irrelevant for the purpose of this thread.

it is not cherry picking at all, more generally those mythical threads only make sense of you match the best versions of each fighter, you agree? you want to find out who the better fighter right? Bu reading your post, I am not sure you want an objective discussion

It's reasonable, too, to sort of try to seek out an objective medium for a fighter during his career and use an idealised version, I think. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, at all.

If it's otherwise, Buster Douglas is taking some serious scalps at HW.

Of course I do; and as is (I thought) inferred previously, I do think the best version of Giardello beats the best version of Toney. I also don't think it's inappropriate to think of other factors that contributed to who these guys were as fighters in a given division.

and that is fine for me of you think that. Toney had a habit of pulling out close and difficult fights at middleweight and the judges seemed to somehow like what he was doing. That is why I give the edge to Toney although the fight with Joey would be close and difficult. That for full disclosure

It is not unreasonable but it would prove a lesser point if we match Joey against anything but a less peak conditioned Toney in my opinion. I take your point on Buster but gto me the Buster example is kind of an extreme as he only had that 1 great win.

Yeah, but that was him at his very very best.

Bowe at his very very best is another example of a fighter who had a really short prime but was woefully inconsistent throughout his career. Absolute best for absolute best he'd do better against the field than some fighters who were way better for way longer.

And there's a bit more here, more importantly. Being **** in some fights at the weight hints at an indiscipline which, although possibly not revealed in other fights by other, inferior fighters, might be revealed, absolute prime for absolute prime, by some other fighter.

    For example, a borderline ATG.

That's definitely a valid way and reason to make a given pick IMO.

I am not sure I agree. In a thread like this, it makes more sense to match the best versions against each other. To be fair, the opening post leaves the question open.

You disagreed with me but I'm not sure how that means I have been discredited. But that's okay, it's a forum - we're supposed to disagree about things. No hard feelings!
