And Chad Dawson losses? Glen Johnson? If he could have he would have moved up to heavy but he didn't. Jonathan Banks? Don't remember him ever winning a title. Eric Harding at no point was ever beating Jones. But he beat up Tarver didn't he? Jones didn't expose Toney as Toney would go on to win a title. What it did was show how talented Jones was.
Toney wasn’t overrated. Tarver vs Ruiz is quite difficult for me to call. I could definitely see Tarver out boxing him, yet I could also see Ruiz making an ugly fight and causing Tarver issues. Hill was definitely faded, but he wasn’t washed up. He knocked out Tiozzo at CW a few years later to pick up a belt. Yes, Tarver did cut a lot of weight before fighting Hopkins. He also claims that by the time the fight came, he had zero energy. But why are you giving him a pass, when you think that Roy’s cut was an excuse?
Reggie gave pretty much everybody apart from Roy trouble. He lost most of the rounds against Nunn, because Nunn was an elite southpaw who was in his prime. It was a very tough match up for him stylistically. McCallum wasn’t in the wrong weight class. He beat Watson, Graham, Collins and Kalambay at MW. Tiberi was fought just weeks after the McCallum fight where Toney just went through the motions. The Sanderline Williams fight was when he was literally fighting every other month on the way up.
You sound like Mendoza obsessing about the Tiberi fight. Tiberi exposed nothing. He fought a version of Toney who’d just fought Mike McCallum a month or so earlier. A version of Toney who’d fought McCallum, Reggie and Nunn all within a 9 month period. I don’t understand why people bring this fight up so much. It’s really baffling. Toney admits he lost to Tiberi, and he did. But not because he was the better fighter. Simply because he went through the motions and was out worked by the fitter guy. This has happened all throughout the history of the sport, and why guys such as SRR accumulated losses in the past.
Reggie Johnson was a very good fighter who was a handful for most everyone he fought. Roy Jones is the only one I've ever seen completely dominate Johnson. Maligna is another underrated boxer who could be quite the handful for his opponents. Roy Jones is the only one I ever saw embarrass Maligna to the point he made him look inept.
I love how Reggie Johnson is being brought up as a black mark on Toney like Tarver didn't have his hands full with a decidedly worse version of Johnson.
