We probably both need to apologize for inflicting this argument on the forum.

Your reasoning is sound up to a point, and that point is your level of confidence in it.

History has shown us again and again, that you do not need large populations, to produce large talent pools.

Uptake of the sport trumps population, every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

This is illustrated by the fact that a number of boxing cities, have consistently outproduced nations with much larger populations.

History has also shown us, that the best talents, don't necessarily emerge from deep talent pools.

The next great heavyweight might theoretically come out of Luxembourg.

Neither a small population, nor indeed a small talent pool, necessarily proves that the man of that era, would lose to the man from a stronger era.

I always saw RJJ as more of an argument for the old timers to be honest.

Sure, you can argue that boxing technique improved, but that kind of genetic freak who could circumvent technique, could theoretically be born in any era!

"Genetic freak" This is kind of a cop out those skills did not just appear. We have had plenty of fast, powerful men but his "Talents" came from living in a boxing gym for a long tome.

OK, so theoretically there could have been some guy in the 19th century, who did exactly the same, and got a similar outcome?

Not the point. Calling someone a genetic freak is insulting. The background of these “freaks” is found with countless hours of study.

No there’s not a case for him being similar to Jones as far as skills go. But there were probably fast, powerful guys like him though I’ve never seen film of them.

I take back anything that I have said, that you don't like.

My point , that surely this is the kind of talent, that could randomly crop up randomly in any era?

That's true. But it also applies to Lenny McLean's / Bartley Gorman's illegal boxing scene, too.

It's certainly fine to take refuge in lack of evidence. It might even be the only answer possible for areas where evidence is limited. (Although even here, there is evidence AGAINST Cribb's England being a boxing powerhouse...)

But you can't use "I don't know" as evidence for positive claims. If you really don't know whether Cribb's era was any good, then you can't rate Cribb's abilities above the likes of The Guv'nor or the King of the Gypsies. You've priced yourself out of giving solid answers in the era comparison game.

I wasn’t literally offended but you’ve gotta keep your rep as 1 contender for the “Kind to a fault” belt currently held by Richard. (IMO You got robbed)

Yes- it’s possible but who are you thinking Jan Man?

You’re getting to Jan past his best I had him back out of a Carnera argument. Look at you, you’re a buzzard just like Cooney taking on Young.

Someone is wrong on the internet, Kamikaze. Ours is a call of duty, not glory.

That said, just talking here...I'm thinking at least #6 in the monthly rankings. Eh?

Also, you've made me imagine the sad, but compelling, spectacle of a heavyweight title fight between Larry Holmes and Gerry Cooney that consists solely of 15 rounds of arguing about who would win if it was a boxing match.

This is more like when Cooney came out and crushed the older while once defensively sound Young because of a mistake. Because really a lot of your comments have been demon left hooks straight to Jans theoretical forum chin.

He is down for the count does he have the heart and chin to rise for the occasion? or are the figurative legs gone? He just can’t back peddle like he used to.
