Orlando Zulueta v Arthur Persley

Found a very cool classic on YT today. Check it out. NY rounds scoring basis.

I love these old MSG fights (this one is from 1953) because they had to put on a good show for those paying customers or lose their place in line. Zulueta had an immaculate, stinging left jab, but if one looks closely, one can see that so many of his other punches are thrown with an open glove. Just big slaps, which should account for his meager 7 stoppages in over a hundred fights. Persley, on the other hand, had absolutely no jab. His style was, get close enough to throw punches. And he tried like hell. But once Zulueta realized Persley was a sitting duck for an overhand right, he actually started closing his fist and it paid dividends as he hurt Persley in rounds 6, 7, 8 and 9. In fact, he staggered him on 3 separate occasions in the 9th. A well-fought contest, which I enjoyed.

 

I'd compare Madera to Buster Drayton. For a while both guys were more famous for who their sparring partner was (Canto/Hagler) than anything they'd done in an official contest. Both of them learned from that and late in their boxing lives became world champions who were pretty much guaranteed to give you a good action fight.

His best win on paper would have to be Amado Ursua, right?

Clum, on paper I think I would go with the 15 round win over Takashiki. But I wouldn't discount his win over Candido Tellez either. The Ursua fight was before Ursua really became a contender, although one could argue the Alfonso Lopez fight did just that.

Last night I watched Barney Ross W15 Tony Canzoneri (extended highlights of all 15 rounds).

I don't normally like to watch highlights of fights as context is often lost but this offered at least a full minute or more of each round, and gave a pretty decent idea of what was going on.

First, excellent fight between two ATG's, at or near their primes. Ross would go on to greater fame, and Canzoneri still had more than half his career to go.

This is going to sound really dumb, so apologies off the bat; stylistically, this reminded me some of Haugen-Pazienza. Don't get me wrong, these two were far better of course but you had the whirling dervish in Canzoneri, so full of pluck and bravado fighting with his hands down, launching flurries out of nowhere versus the staid, more consistent and patient attack from Ross, all behind the jab.

And it really was all about the jab. The first three rounds showed both men getting the measure of each other, grappling here, clinching there, trying to figure it out. In the fourth though, Ross began to connect with jabs, then double jabs. He'd then jolt Canzi with short left hooks as he tried to bore in before Ross clinched and spun him, all to start anew.

Hard to actually score it as only about half of each round was there, but Ross seemed to be a step ahead the whole way, for all the vigor and resolve shown by Canzoneri.

Loving Ross's style; tremendous feet, and a rapier jab, if very little power. Extreme durability as well.

 

One of those epic grueling fights I love. Great matchup that made for a pretty close fight.

Joey Archer v Victor Zalazar (NY rounds basis)

Good, tough 10 rounder between the speedy boxer in Archer and the stiff, upright Zalazar who possessed far more zing in his shots. Archer would remind me a bit of Ralph Dupas. Speedy combos, no punch and great usage of the ring. He did well here with that beautiful left jab and wasn't afraid to mix it at times with a good opponent. Zalazar caught Archer in the 7th with a terrific overhand right but Archer kept to his boxing and still won the round IMO. But Gil Clancy caught that and obviously told him to keep up with it because he caught Archer a number more times in the 8th, but then seemed to tail off on its usage. Good fight.

Livingstone Bramble v Freddie Pendleton II (USBA lightweight title)

I saw this fight out there and when I saw the two combatants I knew it was a guaranteed smoker. And they didn't let me down.

If one thinks I was too over the top with the Even rounds, then one needs to watch the fight. You won't be sorry. This was phone-booth warfare. I did not agree with announcer Tim Ryan or that last score. Ryan stated he had Pendleton comfortably ahead, but I saw nothing wrong with the first 2 scores because this was such a close fight. I look at the whole chess board as its unfolding and I saw Pendleton throwing the most but missing a lot and also Bramble catching a lot on his arms, whereas Bramble was incredibly accurate with his shots. A damn good fight.

A terrific fight but the scoring was definitely eyebrow raising. I'm a conservative scorer, but these judges make me look liberal as hell. For one, they did not give Trice a 2 point round in the 2nd round and only gave Brown a 10-8 in the 12th after 3 knockdowns. Wow! The only round I hesitated on was the 9th. I hesitantly scored it Even but jotted a note to revisit the round because something grabbed my attention and it didn't feel right. I did and gave it to Brown after rewatching it. It was Trice's last gasp and he did well but I felt Brown had so much more pop in his punches. The judges seemed to disagree with me (their RBR scoring is on the boxrec page of this fight). Also, I gave the 13th round to Brown 10-8. I felt it was dominant. Trice did nothing but run and grapple. He was just trying to survive. He threw a few at the end of the round, but not enough to make me forget what went on for the first 2:50 of the round. Still, a good fight and I would love to see others scores on this one as there was a lot of drama in this one.

Simon Brown v Tyrone Trice 1

Tough battle. Brown showed that slow and steady wins the race. Trice started fast and got cocky with Brown but then seemed to run out of steam. Brown came on in the second half and was by far the more durable, taking everything Trice threw at him and hurting him back. I was surprised it went past the 12th because Trice was done. Brown thought he'd won but Smoger allowed it to continue. It was only a matter of time after that.

Jel, great card. We only disagree on the 9th (that 9th round keeps dogging me). You and 2 of the judges had the 9th for Trice, the 3rd judge had it Even and I had it for Brown. Clearly a good few facets to that round. What do you think of the judges scoring the 2nd 10-9 and the 12th 10-8? I agree with what you said about the 12th. Amazing that it wasn't stopped.
