Schmeling lost to Baer and got bailed out by low blows in that other fight. The guy wasn’t invincible. Not saying I pick Toney.

Also, to continue our Toney vs Foreman discussion in the other thread (since this one seems more suitable), I'd make a couple quick points, from memory.

First, I don't know whether cruiser Toney has the durability that Fat Toney displayed. At 194 or 196 (don't remember which), cruiser Toney isn't absorbing Rumble in the Jungle shots.

Second, Foreman probably doesn't face Toney in Zaire. So his stamina is going to be a bit better.

Third, Foreman had enough gas in the tank to punch out Peralta. Fighting Big Toney (whom I take to be Holyfield Toney) is not going to be the same kind of energy expenditure as wrestling with Ali, fighting Lyle, or massacring Norton/Frazier on a round by round basis.

Fourth, Foreman actually did get to people. As noted in the other thread, Ali didn't try to outmaneuver him, because he knew Foreman could hurt him more directly that way. And post Zaire basket case Foreman got to Young, too. Didn't knock him out, but got to him. Same with Ali on the ropes. Ali absorbed a LOT of punches to the body.

Toney could slip n' slide against Jirov. He could do the same against the more cautious Rahman and the less physical Peter. But Foreman was different. He hit harder than either Rahman or Peter, IMO (not to mention little Marciano-sized Jirov), and was much better at playing rough. Toney is going to be shipping a lot of very hard punches to the body at the very least. And he lacks the power to hurt Foreman back for at least 6-8 rounds. Probably longer, since this ain't Zaire, and Foreman is presumably not going to have a religious experience following dehydration. Even with that, Young couldn't stop Foreman, and Young was better than any of the Toneys -- Big, Fat, Cruiser, or polka-dotted.

Fifth, Foreman was green against Peralta. Doesn't mean that Foreman necessarily improved technically from an orthodox standpoint. But I'd expect he would at least have developed a greater low cunning in landing those stupid swinging punches. Same as Baer -- he got better at *something* that involved bringing his fists into an opponent's face with great force, even if a purist wouldn't call his newfound skill "boxing."

 

Yep. Foreman crushes Toney or outhustles him to a one-sided decision. Even Old Foreman would beat him (although it's much closer). Toney was flat-footed & I don't see any small, flat-footed fighter with little power beating Foreman.
