James Jeffries vs Larry Holmes (1905)

It's whether modern skills could translate effectively in a back in the day scenario? Holmes didn't throw much to the body would his hands hold up wearing the old style gloves ? In passing ,Holmes was pretty hard to stop too, and he was being hit by modern sized heavyweights in their prime.

 

Then Holmes would have bigger chances of whupping him.

 

You focus on Holmes not being prime, but Jeffires was green in the first Sharkey fight and fought with a broken arm in the second. Be consistent, I know mcvea that you don't like Jeffires.

 

Jeffries would meet his match with Holmes. Larry had unbelievable recuperative powers and a tremendous chin. Everything Jeffries did best is pretty much nullified by Holmes.

Jeffries would not be able to outbox Holmes, he would get caught coming by Holmes with his jab. Holmes would also be landing a steady stream of fast lead rights. Jeffries best chance is on the inside but Holmes also has solid uppercuts and his chin and stamina would hold up well until he could tie up and disengage. Holmes would be able to dictate the pace of the fight and therefore not wear down fast enough for Jeffries to win on points by outlasting him.

Holmes would pick apart JJ and has a really good chance of stopping him before 15 rounds.

JIm Jeffries is a beast, and I am a big fan, but this matchup does not go his way.

 

Jeffries did not have a broken arm in the second fight ,though Sharkey dislocated his .He was green but had the benefit of countless exhibitions with his employer the champion Corbett . My UN is Tonto.Jeffries was a great champion, who said he wasn't certainly not me?

Yeah I just think jeffries’ face would take too much punishment. He had poor defense. Had his nose broken three times by lesser men. I remember how bloody and swollen Gerry Cooney’s face looked in the late rounds of their fight. I can see the same thing happening to Jeffries

 

I'd guess Holmes gets a tko stoppage at some point ,dependent on how merciful the referee was.

 

In those days it would have taken a while. Dangerous thing about a fight like this is that the officials might let it go until Jeff was permanently disabled. A big puncher like Lewis or Foreman would end it quicker hence saving Jeff’s life

 

The beating Fitz gave Jeffries in their second fight emphatically proves your points!

 

Getting the nose broken doesn't equal to having a poor defense.

 

The beating Fitzsimmons gave Jeffries didn't make James struggle, he wasn't hurt at any point of the fight from reports I've seen. Getting the face cut doesn't equal to taking a beating.

 

My point was is that he was hitable

 

Like any fighter, most contemporaries don't call Jeffries defense bad. He was never in a trouble of being stopped during his career and he faced some very strong punchers. You can't lean on your chin alone at HW.

 

Three times does imo especially in only a few fights.
