I kept hearing in the buildup of Usyk-Joshua that Joshua was the "bigger, more athletic" guy. It was essential for Joshua to utilize his "athleticism" to defeat Usyk who was simply a boxer. This is very interesting as I saw Usyk be faster, more coordinated, more fluid, have better stamina, better hand eye coordination, and looked just about as strong in the clinch. Regardless of who won the fight, simply the way they move is very, very different. Usyk glides around, and Joshua often looks like a 90's HW plodder who was taught to box. I wouldn't go so far as Fury in saying Joshua is a big stiff idiot robot, but I am at a loss as to this narrative that he is Athletic, especially more athletic than someone like Usyk. Can anyone explain this?
I think "athleticism" is basically been turned into a word for big shredded black guys(im being serious) but I've been thinking about the same thing, he's actually not that athletic. He is super stiff and has a **** cardio doesn't seem like a freak athlete just a pumped up bodybuilder with basic fundamentals who made it much further than he should. The definition of athleticism is " the physical qualities that are characteristic of athletes, such as strength, fitness, and agility." He has strength fitness is sub par cse he gets tired easily agility sucks he is very stiff Maybe you could say wilder is a freak athelete cse despite his **** boxing fundementals he has power speed and a good cardio i have rarely seen him tired unless of course vs fury2 in which he was getting a beatdown.
I've realised recently that most people's takes on boxing are rarely intelligent or well-thought out. That includes 'experts', promoters, boxers, and all too often, trainers. All they're looking at when they say that is his body. That's it. He has a good body and he doesn't neglect his training ... but mostly his body. Usyk is clearly the better athlete overall. You can see this both in the ring and even in the varied disciplines he takes up (like Loma) as part of his training. That's what being an athlete is. But he doesn't have the physique of AJ so they call Joshua the better athlete.
I second this , my idea of athleticism in boxing would be something akin to RJJ ,Ali or Pacquiao where you're getting away with doing something which would get a mere mortal lying face first on the canvas. I don't see an "athletic" bone in Joshua, everything which he does in the ring seems to be diligently drilled in the gym like most other boxers.
He's clearly strong. Definitely hits hard and when younger was identified as an 11 second 100 metre runner. Definitely athletic characteristics. Boxing, hits hard but what about against a good mover? Does he land often? Agility, eye coordination, fast on his toes? Not great tbh. Not to mention the mental capacity required for boxers? Everything combined, you need to be a lot more than athletic. Tell you who ticks most boxes, Oleksander Usyk.
Aj doesnt even have such a good body, he actually is pretty fat. Especially around the hips and legs, there is zero definition in his physique. Over then that is not very strong nor fast. Wilder is pure athleticism, gifted with ridiculous explosiveness and agility.
doesnt matter what your 100m dash is. Ruiz and fury are way faster then aj and they would probably need 14-15 seconds on track.
That's my point. 100 metre dash was a selling point with AJ however this is boxing, you need other more important attributes.
Colloquially it means you are of West African descent, have a sixpack and are good at running the 100M or playing basketball. The problem with AJ is that he's in the wrong sport: he could have potentially been a very good track and field athlete. Instead he decided to enter a brutal profession where he was promoted above his station by nefarious forces and consequently beaten-up by obese Mexicans and slick Ukrainians for countless millions to see down the generations.
He was the bigger guy but not the more athletic guy. Joshua has size, has power but speed goes to Usyk, coordination clearly goes to Usyk, just watch him juggle and dance lol. Agility also goes to Usyk, I doubt any heavyweight now can match him in agility, he's in a league of his own there. Joshua is pretty athletic though it's what stood out when he first turned pro. He did that 11 second 100m sprint on that TV show before he turned pro, he clearly had decent speed and very good power and for most people that's what athleticism basically comes down too but obviously there more to it than that. I think Joshua stood out as an athlete when he turned pro simply because the division was littered with out of shape fighters like Stiverne, Arreola, Chisora, Povetkin sometimes, Solis, Fury too, it wasn't exactly what you'd call a bunch of elite level looking athletes it was dad bods as far as the eye could see lol. So when Joshua turned pro you had this sculpted muscular heavy who looked like he spent more time in the gym than the local KFC which was almost unique at the time. So his athleticism was over emphasised, he wasn't some new Ali, Tyson or even Wlad. He is athletic just not the outstanding athlete he was made out to be.
