James Jeffries vs Larry Holmes (1905)

I could swear I remember reading something to that effect.

Hm...Page 7 of his autobiography (via Google Books) says he was wrestling in "grade school" at 80 and then 90 pounds as a kid. I don't know whether he continued into his HS years, at least not that I found within the last couple minutes.

That gives us the average of 216 lbs, without including Finnegan fight (219.5 lbs with this fight). You also excluded Griffin fight (220 lbs) and Ruhlin fight (218 lbs), but I assume you have reasons for that.

Maybe I suck at maths, but it seems that they are identical. Except that I don't suck at maths, because I'm physics engineer.

Cool, except I wasn't wrong because I can calculate arithmetic average - something childs can do at the age of 10.
There is absolutely no difference between their average weights. Holmes peaked at 223 lbs but I hope you don't want to use this version of Holmes here, because he was clearly past his peak.

 

My understanding is that this is peak for peak. So whichever fights each were at their best for (that we have weights) are probably what we'd use.

 

Yeah, that's why I don't see anyone picking 220+lbs Holmes.

 

Go for the gold. Pick the retired Jeffries before the Johnson fight.
