2nd round is a clear 10-8, no question. Pretty inexplicable to score it 10-9 because it was pretty even up to the kd and then Trice got the better of it after knocking Brown down. 10-9 is wrong.

But 10-8 for the 12th is really inexplicable! Three knockdowns and Trice was so close to being stopped. Up to the knockdowns it was pretty even so no argument to see why Trice wouldn't have been 8-10 for the first knockdown, 7-10 after the second and 6-10 after the third. And two of those were huge knockdowns. Again, just wrong from the judges.

Katsuo Tokashiki was pretty solid, too.

Yeah, you and scartissue are both probably right on that one. I've seen only the first and third fight of their series. At some point I need to watch the other two.

    Lewis vs Bruno

I'm watching this because there is a thread going on in the other forum on who would win Joshua vs Bruno. I'm trying to be as impartial as I can and giving Bruno another look since its been a while.

    Round 1
Both start trying to establish the jab, Lennox does well the first minute then Frank begins landing his. Feeling out round though it appeared Bruno had just a little more success

    10-9 Bruno (close)

    Round 2

Both guys jabbing again, Bruno being more aggressive. Lennox lands a few nice 1-2 s to Bruno's body, Bruno stuns Lennox with a combo. Bruno also with a nice right hand to Lewis' head. At the end of the round they clinch and Bruno for no reason begins rabbit punching lewis multiple times, Lennox responds and both guys start just rabbit punching each other. Referee calls time and warns both

    10-9 Bruno
    20-18 Bruno

    Round 3
Lennox comes out aggressive but Bruno lands a 1-2 and Lennox is seriously hurt. Bruno pnloads some on the ropes. They get in close and Bruno proceeds to land multiple low blows and a hard rabbit punch (which Lewis returns the favor). Dirty stuff Frank. Lewis is wobbling all over and tries to dance the cobwebs away (literally). Round ends, Lewis is lucky not to have been dropped or stopped there

    10-9 Bruno
    30-27 Bruno

    Round 4
Much better round from Lewis as he begins landing some fast jabs. Lewis' overhand right is very looping here and a but telegraphed. Bruno still coming forward with his jab and occasional right

    10-9 Bruno (close)
    40-36 Bruno

    Round 5
Bruno being assertive coming forward with the jab and occasional right. Also landing blatant rabbit punches that irk me to no end. Lennls landind a nice 1-1-2 but Frank answered right back

    10-9 Bruno
    50-45 Bruno

    Round 6
Hard fought round, Lennox beginning to take over and Frank backing away. Some low blows from Lewis and some more rabbit punching (one was almost catastrophic) from Bruno

    10-9 Lewis
    59-55 Bruno

    Round 7
Bruno trying to reestablish his jab and be the aggressor. Lewis lands a big hook and Frank is in trouble. Frank against the ropes Lewis teeing off of him, ref stops the action to warn Lewis of holding and hitting. Action resumes big uppercuts and right hands by Lewis with Bruno against the ropes and the refs seen enough

    Lewis KO7

I had Bruno winning at the time of the stoppage and my opinion of him hasn't really changed. A very good effort from Bruno who was able to trouble Lewis with the jab and occasional right hand. Bruno threw waaaay too many rabbit shots, it was borderline uncomfortable at times. You could tell he was fading though somewhere around late round 5, it was starting (though it was a rough fight to be fair).

PD, I actually checked this fight out again last month. I had it a bit closer, but Bruno still up. Here was my score:

Lennox Lewis v Frank Bruno (for Lewis' heavyweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Lewis
    Round 2: 10-9 Bruno
    Round 3: 10-9 Bruno
    Round 4: 10-9 Lewis
    Round 5: 10-9 Bruno
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: Lewis stops Bruno

Total through 6 completed rounds: 58-57 Bruno (actual scores: 57-57, 57-57 and 59-55 for Bruno)

An excellent fight, one which Bruno made Lewis to look quite ragged at times. Frank had that ramrod of a jab working so well but Lewis was a bit more versatile with his punches and it was simply a case of Bruno just got caught in the 7th and Lewis was not about to let Frank off the hook with the kind of fight he was putting up. Well worth watching.

Our scores are pretty similar, I had the first round barely for Frank and could see it going the other way. Lewis looked like he couldn't really get comfortable in this fight for the longest time. Also they kept putting a blanket on Lewis between rounds, I could see the guys' breaths sometimes during the fight so I'm taking it was pretty cold out there.

    Lupe Pintor vs. Jovito Rengifo

Not a very long fight to score, but I remember watching this fight live back in the day and thoroughly enjoying it. Both fighters hitting sharp and clean and it was a damn good fight as long as it lasted.

    Round 1: 10-9 Rengifo
    Round 2: 10-9 Rengifo
    Round 3: 10-9 Rengifo
    Round 4: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 5: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 8: Pintor stops Rengifo

Total through 7 completed rounds: 67-67 Even (actual scores: 67-66 twice for Rengifo and a 67-66 for Pintor)

Although I had it even going into the 8th, one could see Rengifo slowly fraying at the edges. They griped at the stoppage, but it was only a matter of time. Good fight and a good challenge from a fighter who really didn't deserve his shot. But he made the best of it.

    Bennie Briscoe v Tony Chiaverini

I always wanted to see this fight and checked it out today. I remember when it took place and was elated when I saw the result being such a Briscoe fan. The old man really turned the clock back on this one. Clearly he was brought in as fodder for the next step in Chiaverini's ascension. Indeed, Tony was even introduced to his Kansas City fans as the next middleweight champion of the world. And believe me, I remember Chiaverini, and he wasn't a bad little fighter at all. However, more of a very good junior middle than middle. Anyways, watching this fight unfold was a treat. I won't run a card here because I only gave Chiaverini a share of rounds 2 and 3. And that was an absolute Herculean effort on the part of Tony in those two rounds as Briscoe was simply too much. The wife checked in on me while watching the 6th round, because about 5 times I let out an, "Ohhhhhhh!" because Tony's head looked like it had a swivel attached to it as Briscoe pounded him. Chiaverini's corner and the referee were the bravest bunch in the arena because they made no effort to stop the slaughter in the 8th. Twice during the round Tony gave a couple of tells as he looked around to the corner. A real plea to stop the fight. Finally, it was Tony himself who had to wave it off. I won't question his stones for that because you have to see the hammering he was taking at that point. The film quality isn't the best but when Briscoe came over to Tony's corner to commiserate with him one can see he was sliced around the left eye and his right eye was swollen shut. I scored it 70-65 and that was conservative. One could easily have given Briscoe a 10-8 for the 6th round. Even the two rounds I scored Even, one could have given to Bennie as one has to weigh Chiaverini's rapid, sharper blows against the harder blows of Briscoe. The actual scores by the 3 Kansas City judges were 68-67, 68-67 again and 70-60 all for Briscoe. That last judge was Ron Marsh, a former KC heavyweight and a friend of Tony's. That was a more realistic score than the other two, and Marsh must have been very liberal with 10-8 rounds. A real showpiece fight for Briscoe and one super-gutsy effort by Chiaverini, who got in his licks but was up against a very Bad Bennie.

I’d love to see Tony Chiaverini vs. Edgar “Mad Dog” Ross.

Ross was from my hometown and seemed to be on his way to a junior middleweight title shot. I think he had hit NABF title. Took it to KC to defend against Tony and got KO’d.

Ross fought for Pete Ashlock, who owned an arena in Orlando and had Scott Clark, Termite Watkins and maybe one or two other notable/semi-notable guys of the day. Ashlock put on like weekly fights and built up record quickly.

Right after beating Ross, IIRC, Tony took the Ray Leonard payday and got completely outclassed. (As would have Ross, I’m sure).

But in my mind, from my younger days, Chiaverini-Ross was a hugely important fight knocking off the local guy. I really wish I could see it.

Pat, I know what you mean. I was following the two of them back in the day and I thought Mad Dog Ross was unstoppable, which shows what I knew. But, like you, I wish it was out there because I'll bet it was a damn good fight. On the topic of Ashlock, didn't he also manage Mike Quarry for a time?

Re that knockdown. I just come across this from a different angle. Look at judge Nicky Pope's reaction from ringside round about the 40 second mark.

Al, didn't know there was a controversy on this. One of the few fights I haven't yet seen, I guess. I looked at this over and over as well as the different angle from the full fight video and I gotta admit, it is a toughie. It looks like your Dad's right leg slipped out from under him, but at the same time Harada lands a right to the body and we know the Japanese ref is going to call it a knockdown. We hear a good thump on the audio but we also don't know if that was slightly enhanced. Nicky Pope's reaction does look like he is PO'd about the call, which is unusual for a judge to get so emotional. He may have quickly realized how his bread is buttered and quickly regained control of himself. After all, he was getting a lot of work in Japanese boxing. But again, this is a close toughie. What was the general consensus on the knockdown call back home and in the media?

Yes it's just one of those things boxing abroad. The press here said it was a slip and me dad said it was. The consensus was that Harada won but it was close. Peter Wilson, the doyen of boxing writers in England at the time at ringside scored it for me dad by one point. He said the body shots were breaking Harada in half in the later rounds. Nicky Pope had a great view and looked a bit disgusted by it I thought. The thing is I thought me dad won that round, plenty of body shots, kept moving and landed well in the exchanges and on the inside. That knockdown caused a 3 point swing. Nicky Pope as it happens had 2 points between them at the end but he did score a lot of even rounds. The Japanese judges gave those close rounds to the champ. Harada slipped to one knee at the beginning of the 15th but the ref didn't make any mistake about that. The Japanese had it wide similar to the second Medel Harada fight.
