It is what it is. Loads of them have in the last 20 years. From Roy Jones to James Toney to Billy Joe Saunders.
He’s been doing it for a while and his transformation after popping on VADA’s test show he’s taking even more now. His transformation may be the most egregious since Pazienza. I personally don’t count Canelo as a top fighter or will never say he’s a great. Some other guys juiced at the end of their career, while others like Pacquaio and Jones were obliterating their opposition, in Pacquaio’s case, great opposition, still larger than himself. Canelo got about three gifts, another close one, silly weight stipulations and has only started dominating an inept pool of super middles after bailing out on a hot 160, maybe because he figured he couldn’t pop for clen again and figured if he gets caught again he’ll blame Mexican toothpaste or Mexican soap and his friends at the WBC and his fiercely loyal (and biased) fanboys will not only defend him but elevate him further. And his juicing began in his 20s. Probably early 20s even. Fraud.
Everything about him has an asterik against it for me. As Chris said, it's the most blatant drug use since Pazienza and the whole camp down there are stuffed full of Mexico's finest performance enhancers. It's the most dangerous thing in the sport the fact that you're an absolute pariah in any other sport for being a drug cheat except boxing, where the aim is to do physical damage to your opponent.
For those who buy his Mexican beef excuses (lol): If it’s so easy to just look at a taco and you’ll get clen, then you are probably cheating just by eating beef in Mexico. It’s like your knowingly taking something you know will give you a banned substance. You’ve just got to look at Canelo’s physical transformation while gaining speed & power, extra muscles and losing a neck to know. Plus, even the tea in his training camp made Valdez **** fire, so I’ve got to believe the toothpaste is loaded too, probably the soap too. What’s interesting is that Canelo told one of those magazines of his diet in training camp and he said only fish & chicken. No beef. So the odds of getting a banned substance in the one taco he ate months earlier? Or maybe they juice these fish too? Or maybe like any objective boxing fan, you can concede the man is a cheater.
No mountain of evidence against him and he generally does extended testing, so I give him the benefit of the doubt. One positive test for a bronchodilator that many Mexican athletes (hint) have tested positive for isn’t that big of a deal.
His record & Floyd's should have been cancelled already long ago. BOTH have been proven to have cheated
Agreed .. the popular freckled red head who the VAST majority of the boxing world had GGG outpointing him in both ... A rigged VEGAS venue so the boxing machine can make money ..
It's horrible. He might have actually ended Saunders' career. But hey, it's combat sports, some guys will always do it. The big money draws will also get away with it.
He has looked super good since that first loss. Most still have him losing the rematch, but narrowly. Really, at Super Middleweight he has found himself. I don't think he should stay there, not since the destruction of Smith and Saunders. But he looks like one of the best P4P. I cannot rank him best P4P, though, because he has done NOTHING to suggest he's on Lomachenko's level. P4P Loma is still far and away the best. That being said, Fury is a MONSTER, his ability to move so incredibly well IN SPITE of his size, shoots him to the very top of the list. And he added respectable offense to his repertoire with just 6 months training. Usyk, is a similar story: big dude who fights like a much smaller dude, can do it all and wins big in big fights. If Canelo is to be ranked top P4P, he needs to move to LHw (not sure why he hasn't). The top dogs there are much more interesting challenges than the dudes at 168.
I like your books so I don't want to ruffle your feathers but the reality is all top pros are on steroids I don't think Canelo should be singled out as if the people he is fighting aren't using even at the Journeyman level we have PED abusers. There are countless other reasons to dislike Saul.
