After all the talk on this board about James Toney's heavyweight fights decided to re-watch some. His fights with Holyfield, Ruiz and Rahman 1. What was noticeable besides his increase his weight was his balance got a lot worse every fight, when he threw the left hook against Rahman he was near falling over. Whilst against Holyfield he was floating in and out every punch was coming off partly because Evander was past it although Toney looked good at 217lbs.

Round 9: Stoppage, kinda sad to see Evander perform like that, Toney's post fight interview was hilarious. (78-74 at the time of the stoppage)

Scored the Toney vs Ruzi fight 116 - 111 can't find my breakdown although considering its now a no contents doesn't really matter. The knockdown was never a knockdown Toney stepped on Ruiz foot.

116-113 Rahman seemed fairly clear obviously two judges didn't think so. Hassim work rate was impressive. James lack of heavyweight power was on display he landed majority of the right hands he threw but with little to no effect and Hassim wasn't known for the greatest chin. Commentators were real hard on Toney about his weight called him a "fat tub of goo" before it even started and later the champion of obese ppl lol

 

Carmen Basilio v Pierre Langlois II

It wasn't the greatest fight, but they were both plucky. Clearly I was far more impressed with Basilio's work than Langlois (pronounced by the American blow-by-blow announcer as "Lang-loy". Personally, I always pronounced it as "Lang-wahh". But if someone with more of a handle on French pronunciation can set me straight, it would be appreciated). And clearly more than the judges. I just had a greater appreciation for Basilio's bodywork than what Langlois was pitching. I though Langlois had a decent jab, but he didn't seem to use it much. He had more heft, especially in the later rounds as he was a full-fledged middleweight, but lacked a punch. Whereas, Basilio's body work was crisp and I felt he almost always got the better of the exchanges. Still, a decent fight.

One side note; with NY scoring, when a fighter is penalized, they simply take the round from him and give it to the other fighter. I felt Basilio won the 8th anyway, so there is really no deduction at all.

 

Dwight 'Tiger' Walker v Mark Frazie I

This fight is a blast from the past for me. I remember watching this back when NBC was flooding the airwaves with boxing and I loved the fight for all the time it lasted and all that occurred. Here we go:

Round 1: 10-9 Frazie (scored it Even but 1 point deducted from Walker for a kidney punch)
Round 2: 10-10 Even (scored it for Walker, but Mercante called a knockdown on Walker which appeared dubious and it was the only thing of note that Frazie did in the round. Gave Frazie a point for the knockdown but could not give him the round for that.)
Round 3: 9-9 Even (scored it for Walker but had 1 point deducted for a low blow)
Round 4: 10-9 Walker
Round 5: Walker DQ'd for another low blow

Total through 4 completed rounds: 38-38 Even (actual scores not known)

This fight has to be seen to be believed, but don't turn it off after the fight because the post fight interview in the ring between Pacheco, Mercante, Murad Muhammad and Walker was almost as good as the fight. They cut it just as they started interviewing Frazie, but I do recall Pacheco asking Frazie if he would give Walker a rematch and he immediately responded, "Sure!" I recall seeing the rematch too but Frazie came in with a real plan and completely outclassed Walker in the rematch. Anyways, this is so bizarre I had to post the video with my text. I hope you enjoy it for some craziness.

Robin Blake v Adolfo Medel

If anyone is in the mood for a veritable 10 round war, you really need to check this out.

Total: 97-95 Blake (actual scores: 97-95, 96-94 and 95-94 all for Blake)

This was simply fannnnnntastic! They ripped away at each other for 10 rounds and I would have been good with a draw. I have to give credit to the Texas judges. By their scores, there was no partiality towards Blake. They appeared to reflect what actually went on in the contest. Blake received his title shot at Jimmy Paul after this fight and I looked up Medel wondering why I had never heard of him before and where his career went. I thought with those speedy, hard combos of his he would be a shoe-in as a top contender. But as it turns out, at the age of 20, that was his last fight. I have no idea what went on. If there was an injury which prevented him from going any further or what. He didn't seem to lack heart, so that is a mystery. Maybe there was just something else he wanted to do with his life. Anyways, again, what a fight! Highly recommend it. I wouldn't steer you guys wrong.

Brilliant fight to watch, merciless to score. I always make it hard on myself by taking in every nuance and shift in momentum. It's why sometimes I like just to sit and watch and enjoy rather than score. But nevertheless, almost every round was tight. Roman didn't get his engine going in full throttle until the 4th when he started rolling. But even then, Watanabe could turn a round around with his power. Very close despite my score. I was sorry to see this was Watanabe's last fight. I think he could have turned it around in a rematch. But it is what it is. BTW, Roman reminds me of Albert Davila when he gets his combinations going.

The main difference between our cards is that I didn't score any even rounds but like you, I found this very difficult to score.

Sometimes when you start watching a fight you know that if you score the initial rounds even, you could end up scoring a lot of even ones because it's not going to get easier to separate them and that's how I felt with this one, hence why there ended up being a winner on my card each round even when some were razor thin.

It was a high level chess match but had some good exhanges too. I felt Roman was a little slicker than Watanabe and the clearer rounds went to him so the margin of victory on both our cards is about right. I'm actually glad this was Watanabe's last fight in a way. If you're going to go out, losing a competitive decision after a dominant title reign to a guy who would be a great champion himself isn't bad. Better to go that way and be standing at the bell than bludgeoned into defeat, anyway. Hard to say whether a rematch would have been any better for Watanabe, though. I'm not so sure.
