Perhaps not necessarily wholly unpopular but amongst fans, the question of same is polarising: Ali scored a legitimate flash KD of Sonny Liston in their rematch. Slow motion replays allow us to work backward from the premise of a so called, unseen “phantom” to a punch that did indeed land and then to a punch of such speed, timing and implied impact so as to justify Liston hitting the deck, if only for a few seconds. However, the “act” Sonny put on thereafter in his failed efforts to rise was laughable. And yet he had previously accused Ali of impersonating a fighter? Damn better than Sonny’s impersonation of a fighter discombobulated. Damn I love that word.
Do you think while Liston was on the ground he had a change of heart but by the time he for up it was too late. Strange he got up and started fighting again.
As I see it, after deciding to stay down and feigning a groggy attempt to rise, Liston might’ve expected the usual mechanisms to kick in, like Ali staying in a neutral corner, Walcott maybe starting a count as he should’ve or at least checking the elapsed time (beyond 10 secs) when Sonny rose. I don’t think Liston could fake staying down any longer unless he literally pretended to lapse into unconsciousness. Also, while Liston put up his gloves to continue he didn’t throw a single punch as Ali tore in slinging punches. I don’t think Ali landed anything of consequence bar perhaps a left hook then Walcott stops the fight not because of what was happening right then but under advice and as a delayed execution of his omitted duties. It was a real circus in the ring that night. LOL.
thats exactly what happened. His pride wasnt gonna allow him to say no more as he sat on the canvas, so he got back up after Walcott fuc ked things up. the resulting onslaught wouldnt have seen him last much longer anyway had the fight not been stopped
mine has always been about Roberto Duran and his excuses to his losses. People don't like what I say about it, but I am just stating what I believe.
Odlanier Solis was actually really good for a brief period and Vitali got denied a signature win (if not loss) when Solis blew his knee out.
Duran never really beat anybody of note. He was always losing, making excuses. He even blamed a couple of nice lesbians one time. What kind of guy does that? I bet they were really nice..
Maybe opinions has changed over time but on these boards at least I’ve always thought that the reverse was the more popular. Views like the Tyson v Holyfield fights in 96 showed that Holyfield always had the style to beat Tyson and he would have beaten him no mattter when they would have met. Also Bowe was never as good as in the first Holyfield fight and he knew he would lose against Lewis which was why he dumped his WBC belt to avoid Lewis. Same with Mayweather, I thought that the more common view was Mayweather’s style would have given him the edge over Pacquiao no matter when they fought. Maybe we should have a new poll to gauge current opinion on these matchups?
This was the question of the thread and this is what most boxing fans whine about when I mention it. He beat some good fighters, but he lost to some great ones also when they were fast fighters. A lot of speed, which was why he lost more than any excuse. Is my opinion.
