Would Young stay away for 12 round or would Wilder catch him at some point?
    Who wins this matchup?

Jimmy could do this. I think on the right night he could beat AJ.

Young would keep the hell away from him, might even stagger him in the late rounds. Deontay just wouldn't be able to get set.

    12 round UD for Jimmy.

    Young UD.

He was elusive, skilled and very sneaky. Wilder's money punch just won't find the target.

There was an interesting interview with Young and he said his game plan was to "constantly either be too close or too far away for him to land anything effective". Young's brilliance was criminally underrated and his statement perfectly sums up the sweet science of a defensive fighter.

No matter how powerful the opponent, if you smother them and get within their range, they can't get any leverage on their shots. Young on the other hand was very comfortable working on the inside or simply killing the clock with clinching and wrestling. As for long range, Young would stand just inches outside the opponents maximum reach so that anytime they tried to throw a long jab or right cross it could whizz right past his head or he could roll with the shot and not take the full damage. This was the secret to young's longevity and why so many opponents became exhausted and/or looked silly just barely missing him landing glancing blows.

I think Young in his prime in the late 70's would have been one of the absolute worst possible opponents for Wilder. The bronze bomber telegraphs so many of his punches and rarely throws combinations. He had suspect stamina and doesn't jab enough to maintain his height/reach advantage. The way to beat young is to be busier than him and don't try to take his head off, throw nice clean punches and control the pace. If young gets scared or discouraged he goes in his shell or waltzes around looking for counters. Wilder simply lacks the discipline to this.

Outside of a punchers chance, I don't see him beating Young even in a best of 3. Young would download him and then pick him apart for an ugly game of cat and mouse.

Young is skilled enough to outpoint him, but if Wilder somehow manages to land one big right, it's all over.
