I am glad Wilder is not retiring - He still deserves another shot IMO.

He was knocked out by Ruiz, and outboxed by Usyk…how is that better than losing twice to Fury?

Im not Ortiz's biggest fan but what level is Whyte better than him?

 

I'm a firm believer that you can only truly judge fighters by who they've been in with - anything beyond that is unsupported projection and more likely to be shown wrong than not (because bellcurves).

Ortiz best win is Jennings.
Whytes best win is Parker.

Ortiz next best win is probably Hammer, then scuba Scott and then it dives off a cliff.
Whytes also beaten Chisora twice, Helenius, Wach and Rivas... And that's being charitable by taking context into account and not including Povetkin.


So Whyte's beaten a former champion in Parker whilst Ortiz beat a gatekeeper level fighter in Jennings... And Whyte's beaten Chisora, who alone has at least an equal resume to Ortiz, and several other fighters who'd go straight into Ortiz top 3.

Sorry, I don't see how these two are remotely comparable enough to be considered anything other than a level apart.

 

The only thing Wilder deserves is what he earns.

 

As long as his health permits it I hope we see Wilder back in the ring. I don't know about deserving a shot. There's others that have been waiting in line, paying their fee's and climbing the rankings, but Wilder brings a lot to the table, belt or no belt. If he strings a couple of decent wins together and has the backing from Haymon I'm sure either WBC or another of the bodies will be pushing him to the front of the list.

He'll need the 6 months and more to recover. I suspect a US opponent would be the best choice for a rebuild / comeback. It would be good if he could reaffirm his status as the leading US HW, maybe Ruiz Jr or Hunter could have something to say about that. I'd sooner he fought credible opponents from here on out because he can't have too long left.

I would also feel a sense of loss if we don't get to see him against Joshua before he hangs up the gloves, at one point it looked like it would be the biggest fight in our era. Even if neither of them have a title, that's a fight I'd like to see. Joyce or Whyte would also be good UK v US match-ups if time / events allow.

 

I don't want to see him retire, I want to see him against actual opposition besides Fury and old Ortiz.
If he retires now, and Fury actually turns out to be the best of the generation, he (and his fans) will always use that he only lost to the best and almost beat him (bogus draw). While never having fought the best with bad style matchups.
