Wilder and Fury "the cherry pick gone wrong"

I reckon that Fury has always thought that Wilder was crap and thought that he could beat him on his worst day. Agree with OP Wilder thought it would be an easy win and Fury knew that’s what Wilder thought because I remember Fury saying before the first fight You’ve made a big mistake

 

If 30 year old 3rd ranked undefeated former unified and current lineal champion Tyson Fury coming off two tune-up fights in 6 months was a cherrypick (and I agree that he was) how wasn't 39 year old Povetkin even more of a cherrypick? Or 39.5 year old, 13 months inactive Pulev? Or 41 year old, 17 months inactive, defeated in his last fight Wlad?

And how on earth was Fury a cherrypick in the rematch? Wilder didn't have to give Fury the shot, Fury turned down the immediate rematch because he/his team felt they needed more tune-ups. By the time Wilder faced a fully fit Fury in the rematch, Fury was the No.1 ranked HW, as he was going into the trilogy where they had both been inactive and Wilder was a considerable underdog.

Ortiz was also the 5th ranked Ring heavyweight both times Wilder fought him and Hearn had specifically signed Ortiz back in late 2016 to protect AJ from him. That's why he had AJ fighting former Wilder opponent Molina on the same card that he threw Dave Allen in with Ortiz, instead of matching AJ with Ortiz and Molina with Allen. At that stage Ortiz would have probably starched AJ.

The Usyk saga was also interesting. Usyk was AJ's WBA mandatory as soon as he moved up to HW after beating Bellew in late 2018. AJ could have fought him in mid-2019 but who did Hearn/AJ pursue a fight with? Big baby Miller, who was replaced by Andy Ruiz and the rest is history. After the Ruiz fiascos which mandatory did Hearn/AJ pursue? Inactive washed up Pulev coming off poor performances against Bogdan Dinu and Rydell Booker. Hence they succeeded in aging Usyk out another 2.33 years before AJ finally had to fight a top opponent for his mandatory but it wasn't nearly enough and AJ got schooled in his own backyard with 70,000 of his fans in attendance.

However people want to spin this, there are few fighters in the sport of boxing (let alone the HW division) with better quality of opposition in their last 6 fights/3.5 years than Wilder.

It wasnt a cherry pick after the first fight, but by that point it was too late for Wilder, he couldnt really move on without beating Fury in a rematch. And after the first fight the impression Wilder would have got is that Fury couldnt hurt him much and would probably allow him to headhunt for 12 rounds again. Remember the whole "he has to be perfect for 12 rounds" thing.

 

How can fighting a 256 lbs 6' 9'' giant boxer who had an undefeated record and beat the last champion Wladimir Klitschko deemed as "cherry picking"?

Wilder was the bravest boxer ever for accepting the fight with Tyson Fury and putting his WBC belt at stake.

Every single person on earth who watches Klitschko-Fury match sees that Fury is one of the best heavyweight boxers on earth.

When Fury announced his comeback he said it was because he couldn’t have two dossers like Wilder and Joshua as World Champions,or words to that effect .

 

The craziest part is he could have had more money for facing AJ, he more than likely would have beat AJ but chose the 'easier' option of facing Fury.

He most certainly could have. Wilder’s side asked for immediate rematch after the first fight, Fury walked away and signed with TopRank. Wilder could’ve easily used the “rival promotional company” that’s been used against Bud Crawford by PBC welters several times. And for the 3rd fight, Wilder took it when everyone thought he shouldn’t. That’s the exact opposite of cherrypicking, literally.

But you're ignoring the fact that Fury had been inactive for three years, while becoming extremely obese and severely depressed. He had just lost over 100 pounds, with such a weight loss one loses muscle as well as fat and becomes weaker.

Fury was much stronger in the 2nd and 3rd fights.

 

Because
1.) Povetkin became the #1 mandatory challenger with the WBA
2.) Pulev became the #1 mandatory challenger with the IBF
3.) The fight against Klitschko was the for VACANT WBA (Super) Heavyweight and IBO Heavyweight titles.

That's not cherry picking, that's making mandatory title challengers and going after vacant titles.

Meanwhile Dilian Whyte has been ranked #1 WBC contender since 2017. and Wilder STILL managed to avoid him and the WBC ordered Brezeale v Wilder mandatory even though Brezeale was ranked lower than Whyte, that's how BADLY the WBC want a North American champion
