Liston, couple of years removed from being champ but still dangerous. Oscar is due to fight Joe Frazier for the first time but the fight falls through. Liston is chosen for the replacement. Who takes it? The ex champ or the formidable Contender?
Liston takes it on a fairly wide points verdict. LIke most,he can outbox but not stop the rock hard Bonavena. Sonny tires signifigantly towards the end but hangs on. Liston's jab is the key.
Bonavena's toughness will work against him and he will receive a lot of punishment and lose by late stoppage or decision.
I actually like Oscar to hurt Liston in this fight. By this point, Sonny's probably slowly winding down and Oscar s giving him it back. He'd wobble Sonny, but, saying that, i do see Liston getting a very close decision.
True but remember, Oscar actually had Frazier down twice in their actual fight and only lost by split decision.
oscar was a counter puncher and good at it and wasnt that bad at defense I can see him winning son is way to easy to read and slow
yea oscar dropped joe faster then anybody and almost ended him with the 1st drop off of a counter joe stuggled to get up which he never shown as bad as with George
At that stage in Liston’s career it might have been a tough fight. Not sure how it would play out, but I might still favor Sonny to hammer out a win somehow.
Bonavena target practice for Sonny's jab, Probably be the hardest punching fighter Ringo would HAVE ever faced.
Tough fight .. If Sonny was up for it he;'d squeeze it out on points but I don't see any stoppage .. Oscar was more vulnerable to speed than strength .
