Why is UFC commentary so bad?

I was listening to idiots saying Aspen Ladd should have just carelessly stormed through her opponents jab, there was no mention of her trying to slip the jab and counter, is head movement not taught to many UFC fighters?

Could be worse. Could be Cosell.

Was Cosell a hated commentator? I read an article in the ring magazine just after Cosell died saying he had been a very bitter man.

Dunno. But I, personally, find him annoying. Cosell drowns out good fights, trying to focus all of the audience's attention on himself. Sometimes denigrating fighters in the process to spice up his personal Howard Cosell Monologue Show.

    For example:

The difference between Cosell and even a UFC guy like Rogan is that Rogan could have made the Toronto 5 exhibition fun. Instead, Cosell chose to make it unwatchable with an hour of contemptuous whining about how he was too good to have to be an announcer at a sucky event like Foreman's.

    He. Never. Shut. Up.

    Rogan is better than Bispin.

One of the things that made HBO's boxing commentary so special is that you had guys who were passionate about the sport but were also not afraid to disagree with each other and tell it how they saw it. I like the formula they had with Larry Merchant, Jim Lampley and one knowledgeable fighter to bring first hand experience and technical expertise to it. You need to have the right balance between color commentating and play-by-play analysis.

If you focus entirely on technical analysis like Dominick Cruz does, the commentary becomes very dry and boring to casual fans. Hardcore fans may appreciate that, but it has to flow with the action of the fight like Foreman and Roy Jones provided.

Joe Rogan does have some understanding of martial arts from this Taekwondo and jiu-jitsu background. But he often becomes biased within his own created narrative even if the fight is not unfolding that way in reality. Georges St Pierre vs BJ Penn 2 is a golden example of this. Or Israel Adesanya vs Jan Blachowicz. You do have to wonder if in the UFC, and boxing as well, that commentators are given instructions to hype up certain fighters beforehand to try to convince the public of the profitable "political" narrative for their stars. We just saw this with Usyk and Joshua. Mike Goldberg was an idiot and company man who would never challenge Rogan on anything and had no charisma or technical knowledge to offer.

Daniel Cormier is decent at it. He has a good balance of technical breakdown, excitement that you'd get watching a fight with your buddies and has some natural charisma in front of a crowd. One of the things he lacks is that most of his knowledge relates to the wrestling and clinch fighting side of mma and, though he became a better striker in his career, he can't analyze elite level striking at the same level.

That's a problem in general for mma commentary. Even you get an elite professional fighter to commentate, there's always going to be certain areas of their game that they weren't as proficient at or knowledgeable about. When stays in dimensions that they know a lot about, they're great. When it goes into something they weren't personally great at, the analysis suffers a bit.

I think there just hasn't been a former fighter in MMA that's perfect for the role of commentary from a charisma side, either. Honestly, the old McGregor (before whatever the hell happened to him) would have made a commentator. It's hard to find people like that, though.

I remember Mike Goldberg sucked big time. Rogan and Cormier are good. Dominick Cruz is a bit of a know it all nerd sometimes.

Because they all shout “OHHHHHHHH!” every time someone lands a punch.
Imagine if they did that in boxing

Rubbish. Nowadays Rogan often talks absolute rubbish although he explains the bjj techniques really well. Bisping has really impressed me with his commentary. Remember when idiot Rogan said "Rousey could beat 50% of male ufc bantonweights" and every fight when someone lands a solid jab and he screams out "oh he's hurt. he's hurt reeeaaalllll bad" when the fighter isn't hurt at all. Rogan constantly talks absolute rubbish.

Remember when that clown Cruz stated that Conor was trying to "gas out" Khabib in rd 2 of their fight when Khabib was absolutely destroying Conor on the floor. It was an embarrassing take on the fight.

Bisping and Felder don't seem too bad. DC started out good but has become so bad UFC or ESPN actually pulled him from the weekends Hollaway fight as he is close friends with Max and it's become obvious that he can't call a fight like that with out being bias.

Rogan just yells too much for me.
Bisping and Cormier are good. Hardy was also very good. Shouldn't have gotten rid of him. They need to hire Bas and make amends with Hardy.
Cruz has no personality at all.
