Can someone explain to me why Joyce is rated so highly so soon?

He doesn't stack up well with Fury (on speed alone) and Usyk handled him relatively easy in the ams.

He needs to fight Wilder, Ortiz, or maybe Joshua if Joshua loses to Usyk again before I'd believe him as a contender. His win over Dubois was more about Dubois' flaws than Joyce's strengths.

0 reason. When he beat a prospect in Dubois he became really overrated.

Well fact is once you get past the top 4 or even 5 heavyweights there's simply not a lot of depth and separation, add to the fact so many won't face each other and he stands out somewhat due to his background. You're not really wrong about him being rated highly after so few fights but it's the landscape around him that helps him stand out.

Not to say he isn't good because he is, but a lot of it is because he was the first non-established HW to have a big win post-covid. That's when he went from being someone decent cashing in on a long amateur career to a world beater.

There might be 10-12 others who could have had the same success and would have gotten comparable career momentum if they didn't have it already, but they were in stasis.

Look at the manner Del beat Takam

He lost every round practically and then by the grace of god hit a wonder KO

Ever wonder why Del never went for a rematch?

Its because he wasn't that confident and instead quite smartly cashed in on beating an AJ opponent

    Del is Takam level

There is a reason Chisora and Whyte want no part of me.

Mate, you legend. Couldn't have said it better myself. His style is captivating. If he's so slow, why does everyone keep getting their face mashed up by him!? He's tough, deceptive, skilled and humble. Could be the next uk boxing superstar, from the leftfield

    Thanks.

Exactly, if he was just slow he wouldn't be able to hit his opponents at will like he does. In order to be able to do that you have to either be fast or slow/fast.

I believe so. He's flying under the radar at the moment but he could be the face of British boxing very soon.

I think other posts have summed it up better than i could so I'll keep it brief.

His jab is an absolute killer and he's got the best chin in the game. He could pummel pretty much anybody.

That's because he moves so slowly, radars fail to detect any movement...

Seriously though, I think the fast/slow debate is the entry point from casual to hardcore boxing fan. Once people get past the thought speed means anything without the presence of more important core skills/attributes, or the lack of speed is a determining factor when other more important core skills/attributes are high-functioning, then they get boxing. And Joyce.

    He's slow*. So ******* what...

    *slow/fast

    Yes

Absolutely. I have very little patience when it comes to dealing with fans who cannot grasp the concept of slow/fast speed. Their idiocy disgusts me beyond words.

Chisora was getting outclassed before he landed a huge right that put Takam down so no, they are on the same level, however Takam was in his 40s against Joyce so it's a bit of a different case. Joyce is still a top 10 though.

While a definite top ten he needs to fight a higher ranked fighter so he can be more effectively gauged. He has the skills and beat some decent fighters as a amateur, but needs to do so as a pro. Takam and Dubois are solid wins, but they are lower level fighters.

Agree. I think joyce will get taking out at the top level. You cant get hit with the amount he gets hit with plus you cant throw as many as he does with his speed...without walking into something at that level.

Its okay for now because hes fighting either smaller guys/older guys or guys that cant punch. With the exeption of dubois tbf...who,d built his name off of fighting low level guys. Joyce is deceivingly better than he looks tbf. If they match him up well...he,ll take some good names.

But i think big punchers will knock him out. Difference getting hit from stiverne and jennings to say joshua or wilder. I,d take ortiz if hes still in shape to beat him. Thats a great clash of styles tbh and should be his next fight. Excellent counterpuncher who,s older against a younger fitter guy who throws a lot. Be interested to see if joyce could pull it off.

I have rated Joyce highly for some time, picked him to beat Dubois too. He is so much better than he looks, he is a negative optical illusion.
