I don`t think Jones landed that much on Toney other than a few flurries here and there, were these scorecards an accurate reflexion of how this fight went? Official Judging Stewart 108 - 119 Roth 109 - 118 Hamada 110 - 117
Those cards are kind to Toney. A common score would have been about 119-107 would have been around the money. Plenty scored a shutout.
It was a very one-sided fight. Hamada was extremely generous to Toney to somehow have only 7 points between them.
Dominant, completely one-sided performance against an ATG talent. Not sure Toney won a single clear round.
Those scores were about right. Toney didn't even have an argument for winning more than 1-3 rounds. He was totally outclassed by Jones that night.
I was totally disappointed in that fight, I recall thinking that Toney could push Jones and really make a fight of it. Boy was I wrong, for the biggest fight in Toney's career he brought nothing that night. Later I heard the rumors that he was drained and could hardly make weight which Emanuel Steward later said a lack of discipline was what was happening to Toney which is why he kept moving up in weight class. Haven't watched that fight in many years ,,why would anyone?, but I don't remember him taking 2 rounds.
I thought Toney was the favourite, he wa ranked No.2 P4P by the ring and Jones hadn`t cracked the top 10 yet.
What happened was Jones taunted him as an experiment because he suspected that Toney was mimicking him. Jones put both arms down and stuck his chin out and sure enough, Toney responded with the same taunt. Jones proceeded to land said hook on the completely off guard Toney who underestimated Jones' hand speed and Toney stumbled backwards. It was a legitimate knockdown but it wasn't due to Toney being badly hurt. It was his own fault really, he got caught while clowning.
The KD was a push.Toney was off balance from clowning.,Before that, there was a left hook but Toney did not go down from that,Anywa, Toney was not hurt at all
